I once watched a drunk fellow run into the water next to the pier at Holden beach to get whatever his buddy on the pier had caught. He dove in, there was some splashing, and when he got up and walked out of the water he was bear hugging a 4-5 foot shark. He then proceeded to chase people around with it. I've seen my fair share of sharks in the water, but that has to be one of the most (fondly) memorable shark experiences I have ever had
i surf southcoast MA and Rhodey, about an hr and a half south of Cape Cod where there are a lot of 20' great whites. a 13' great white washed up at my main break - then we surfed there a day later. watching shark gps and knowing the seal concentration north at cape cod i am a bit less worried (dont see seals often where I surf except for a big local ive seen for years). Well, at a spot with a long paddle out (1/4 mile maybe), i was talking with my buddy between sets 5' away from each other. all of a sudden he started smacking the water saying 'wtf is that.' I bugged out unfortunately and made a move. when i went back and talked to my buddy he said it was a dead sea turtle that surfaced right next to him or w.e. i know it isnt great to surf around dead animals but im pretty sure we stayed out longer. haha. good times.
I can't even find the right treadde for this, so... Once in the early 80s me and my buddy Roger the Dodger were trippin balls at the Lake Worth Pier at night. They had a big ass aquarium at the foot of the pier, and along with all kinds of pretty multicoloured fishies there was this very large barracuda in the pen. So Roger comes back, after staring into the glass for a long long while, and he says, "don't ever stare directly into that cuda's eyes, it did weird things to me." O Barry
In 36 years of surfing I've only seen sharks twice. Both times it was the fin of an unknown shark species passing by within 20 yards. Always figured that if one wanted to eat you they'd just do it and there would be no warning. When its your time its your time. Only places I've ever felt spooked about sharks was surfing in the Bahamas and a couple of times at Frisco Pier.
I made the mistake of paddling out alone at the big fish processing plant near San Miguel in Baja. Water was yellow and stinky and my eyes burned like hell. Sharkiest feeling i ever had. Caught one wave and went in.
My cousin got bit by one more than once, but they were little ones, like the kinds that are an abundance on the East Coast of Central Florida, whose bites usually aren't fatal. He even had a scar or two from them. Or so he claimed.
Had a boat in the Florida Keys for awhile and liked to go snorkeling a few miles out on the barrier reef with my bro. Some friends from Minnesota flew down for a visit and said that they would like to go diving on the reef with us. We motored out and hooked up to one of the mooring balls in about 40 feet of water that is on a ledge that drops off to super deep. I explain that the sharks patrol the ledge so when go in lets bolt to the shallows. I should have known something was up when they asked for lifejackets. So we all jump in and I swim to the shallows and look back and these to kooks are not swimming to me they're just splashing around the boat. My friend was yelling at me for help. I'm like no, I'm not going to give swimming lessons in these shark infested waters. One of the kooks got back on the boat and the other spent an hour splashing his way to the shallows where I have been waiting. Now I'm cold from no wetsuit and not swimming just waiting, I'm shivering heavy and realize that we can't bring are boat into the shallows to pick him up we have to get him back to the boat. So my friend and I each grab a side of his lifejacket and proceed to drag this lame kook back to the deep water, with him splashing like dork and myself shivering. Looking down an 8 foot Bull shark swam right buy us. I was like O wow, and then the shark made another pass, I said to my friend I think that we're being circled. About half way to the boat my friend left and went to the boat. Now I'm alone trying to drag this splashing kook and I started to think that sharks are attacked to shivering and it might bite me instead of the kook. Then I started thinking I don't even like this dork and I'm mad that he put me here in this predicament with the shark all because he never told us that he didn't know how to swim. About 50 feet from the boat I say Screw him I'm outta here, We can throw him a rope or motor the boat over to pick him up or something, and we did. The kooks went back to Minnesota and were never heard from again. Was I wrong to leave someone that I don't even like alone with a shark?
At one time, back in late 1960s, at Bridges, a surfspot in Aguadilla PR, there was meat processing plant right on shore--it just let out guts and unused portions of cow, pig, dead american surfers (just kidding) into the water. Needless to say, there were a few nice sharks hanging around. Haven't been there for years, do not know if plant is still there.
In for a penny in for a pound lmao. That's what you get for taking kooks out on a boat in shark infested waters and letting them swim for it. "Life is just a cabaret ole chum." It's like being chased by a bear in the woods. You don't have to out run the bear, just one of your "buddies". Enough cliches, it was an awesome story, too bad you didn't give him a nick so he was bleeding, before you left him in the water to die a horrible death getting eaten alive by a 8 foot remorseless hangry bull shark. Please post pics next time you take some Pillsbury Doughboys out for a day on the water.
did you see the white shark attack at coastguard? my friends surf cape a lot even in the summer when the sharks are there the most. ive surfed there and stepping off the sandbar into the darkness can be a little freaky there with all the seals and sharks.
