My lady's family has a place in Delray Beach and it seems pretty much perfect. I hate the cold so the temps are awesome, sure the swell window is fickle but that's the nature of the EC. The fishing is also great when things go flat. As for cost of living and jobs, the whole area is chock full of NYC based companies with a bunch of transplants living down there. Hell, even the delis are just as good as back home. Move a little further up the coast and I've seen nice places just off the intercostal in the 300s, which is unfathomable up north. I think I just answered my own question...
Without giving away too much I sell software for an online company, and work remote from home. But I spent over a decade in the office first before I was able to relocate and go remote.
Yeah man if you lived in kitty hawk or nags head instead of down past Oregon inlet you could easily work a trade. My dad was going to open up an HVAC business down there. Went and looked at places abd started the state transfers m all. Unfortunately they decided to stay in there small mountain town in VA because he already had a good reputation with customers/didn’t want to leave family. I would’ve loved if they had lived there... my lady is looking for jobs along the coast primarily NJ, NC, and Florida.
Yeah, there’s a little more going on up towards Nags Head and KDH, down South it gets pretty desolate though. I would love to make that move or have a vacation home there.
I would move to Santa Cruz if I was a cold water guy and young. I'm a dyed in the wool warm water surfer, Northern Palm Beach County, FL has a good quality lifestyle, but expensive. Good variety of breaks, the good ones are crowded, but I never have a problem. Too much traffic and northern transplants more and more each year. The waves are consistent Sept through May, then it sucks, but Kelly is building a wave pool, so that may change. Cheap and quick to travel to Centro and PR when it's flat here. If my Mom were not here, and all my lifelong friends, and my wife's longtime friends, and our daughter and her fiance, I'd move to Melbourne Beach in a heartbeat, like boom. Way more consistent, less crowed, cheaper cost of living, more mellow folks. Someday when I'm around Barry's age, I'm setting up a retirement home for old surfers there - Shady Barrels. The nurses will all wear grass skirts and serve drinks by the pool side tiki bar overlooking the beach.
Dude are you serious. I got to leave NY. I pay 1550 a month for a 1br/1ba APARTMENT. Granted its a nice apartment in a hoping town but still. I too am looking to buy a house, after the wedding in September. So probably next year. I'm looking at like 500K for a tiny place and like 8K in property taxes a year. Nicer or bigger houses are obviously much more. I get so amazed when i hear/see prices of houses and taxes out of state. Money wise, why would anyone live in NY? With that being said ill probably stay in NY hahaha
I've given this oh so much thought. I've been fortunate to live in and surf most of the well-known spots on both coasts and when I spin the globe I came down to either Kill Devil Hills or Melbourne-area. For both places it came down to a lower cost of living and less brutal weather than the northeast. The job issue pushed me to settle on Melbourne-area. Maybe not the best surf in the world, but good enough and like DP says, plenty of travel options with all that money you're saving. I'm soon to experience the pleasure of San Diego county surfing for at least 3 years. I have a bad feeling I'll be surfing less rather than more. I don't think, at this point in my life, I'll be able to deal with the perceived crowds. I hope I'm wrong.
Lol Yeah it’s quite the difference isn’t it? Why would you stay and pay those liberals all your hard earned money? Sorry, couldn’t resist! Dude, if you moved to FL you could have a McMansion for 500k, and don’t get me started on our low taxes.
Oh believe me, i know. I know I'm still young but in recent years iv become very aware of these things. Property taxes is the big one for me. Its crazy. 10 freaking years of property taxes is still less than what your paying here. Depending on exact locations of course. It's one of those things man. Iv been slowly talking to the fiance about these sort of things. Retirement too. She gets it and knows I'm right, but doesn't want to leave family. Which i get. But the money just don't make sense. My plan is to buy a cheaper house around here, fix it up nice, sell for a profit (hopefully) then maybe move south. Knowing the fiance, once we're in a house up here and paying for it, it'll click and her tune will change. Honestly it probably will for me to. I know, but i wont REALLY know till i own a house. The South is just so much different from here though. And not in a bad way at all. It just makes the thought of a big move like that, 9 hours away, that much more of a shock.
You’ll figure it out dude. I wouldn’t be living here if I didn’t take a hard line with my wife. She wasn’t all about it at first. I became passionate about relocating and put wheels in motion and didn’t accept no for an answer. Selfish? Yes. But she’s thanking me now. So sometimes you just gotta lead by example and go out on faith. You’ll be rewarded for doing so.
Morro Bay- cool area, nice break, awesome rock, good Mexican food, not crowded. Kind of sharky, full time full length suite though.
This coming week if you like lefts.. the west coast of Barbados! https://www.swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/barbados-west
