I was just reading a thing on surfline about nutrition and how to recover from a session. Anywho I was wondering do you guys know how many calories you burn per hour from surfing in cold water?

Definitely a ton. Counting Calories is kind of silly though. Just eat a lot when you get out.

depends on your metabolism, weight, heart rate, age, air temp, water temp, wave count, how hard you paddle, etc. there are many factors that go into how many calories you burn.

thee only thing that makess winter surfing so much more exhausting is that wet suit. if you get a really flexible fitting wetsuit that keeeps you jsut warm enough and not enough to make you sweat jsut form wearing it then its like any other sesssion. but yah i do the same thiing...except i never eat alto before i know im surfing. thats so stupid. makes me so much slower. just wait till after. its so much more rewarding

Yeah I eat a hour Before I get in the water. I useally eat a Muffing and peice of fruit. On cold days a good bowl of oatmeal and a glass of OJ is good . It gives you that energy burst you need mid session . And after I get out I usually eat a good meal . Chicken or Tuna sandwich and a bowl of soup.

Not just eating right will help you with stamina and longevity of strength in the water. A good cardio work out and some weight lifting with work wonders in the long run .

I am diabetic and during a regular workout need about 15-20 grams of carbs per hour to keep my blood sugar stable. During surfing it's usually from 40-60 (or more) grams per hour.

That probably also has a lot to do with the fact that I dont surf all the time, so my body isn't very efficient at it. I imagine some of you that surf multiple times a week don't burn nearly as much.

WebMD has a calorie calculator. For a 170lb person, it estimates that you burn 232 calories per hour for surfing. Surfing is not as an efficient calorie burner as swimming because there can be a lot of sitting and waiting. I would guess that amount goes up in the winter when you are trying to stay warm and paddling with a thick wetsuit and gloves. I know my stamina drops significantly in winter once I put on something thicker than a 4/3 or if it is really windy and cold. It probably also depends on how much you are paddling. If you're fighting a swift current to stay in place or are catching a lot of waves, you're going to burn more too.

I just found this article that talked about calorie demands in the cold. http://www.runtheplanet.com/trainingracing/nutrition/fuelforcold.asp Basically there is only a minor increase in calorie demands and it due mostly to increased clothing not the cold. It said, "The Army allows 10% more calories for the heavily clad troops who exercise in the cold."

Smoke 3 marlboro lights a day and you'll keep that boyish figure.

I would guess that it's much higher than 2-300 calories/hr. You would burn that going on an hour walk. I think it's at least 700 cal/hr. That is, assuming you're surfing and not just being a buoy.

I'll agree with you that it is probably higher than 250 cal/hour but probably not as high as we think. Freestyle swimming was 773 cal/hr but that's because you don't have anything supporting your body but in surfing you have a board that supports your body weight and decreases your profile to make you more streamlined. I would guess surfing is probably around 400-500 per hour depending on wave consistency, size, currents, and if you're in a wetsuit or not. A good 3-4 hour surf makes me feel as hungry as when i finish a ten mile run.
