Watching that video was kinda painful. Shaun Tomson was a great surfer but compared to today that looked almost slo-mo and awkward.

Probably the most dangerous thing about surfing Pipeline would be paddling out that thick ass single fin and having to take off on one of those beasts.

At one time, surfers used to use their longboards, with no leashes, at the Pipeline.
Nowadays?? Leashes, specially designed boards, helmets, and god forbid if they aren't photographed!! Pussies......

 

Back in '81, some chick I once knew biblically got hurt by a couple of goons trying to launch a Zodiac almost exactly like that one.

Tried launching it from Marine Street, a notorious summer shorebreak. Bodysurfers and boggies were yelling at em to leave until the Zodiac got pushed back from a set, causing the propeller to slash her cheek wide open (not running).

I left right when it got real ugly. She had a big long scar for years, maybe still has it. And she still looked hot with the scar.
