Good call - MSW has it at 64˚ which seems about right. 9˚ is all the difference in the world when it's 55˚ to 64˚ - that's a real threshold of comfort.
I'm free to move the day forward or back if that's what the size prediction does. Meaning I can do Thursday or Saturday if it shifts. If the predicted AM winds or size drops then my gamble is a bust.
Super cool morning. In the dark it looked similar to yesterday. Cool im thinking. Headed out. Much cleaner and closer to high tide than yesterday. First wave was a left. I don't know man. Standing on the beach it looked only waist, maybe stomach high tops. But this thing felt like a shoulder high wave. I think it was just a combination of stiff offshores, higher tide so more water, slightly higher period stop more punch. I had to grab my damn rail on the thing. It was weird. Caught a bunchb of waves. Cruisers. To high on the wave and you'd get blown out the back. What was really cool was the dolphins. Iv seen dolphins plenty around here but today was different. So I'm waiting for a set and i just quickly see a fin. Little wave blocked my view then i couldn't find out again. Not knowing what it was i became observant and ready to react....just in case. Only seen a shark twice around here and they were small/far away both times. This was close. So a wave comes and i catch it. Plan on taking it to the beach to do a quick scan before i paddle back out. Well as in cruising down the line i discovered what it was. Out in front of me was a dolphin riding the wave with me. So cool. Never seen that in person. Such a cool experience.
Funny you mentioned this. I took my girl out in some thigh to waist hi juice early this morning. First of all, bad decision on my part because she was freaking out on the size, plus the offshores were standing them up. She’s really only surfed some ankle slappers to knee so this was a bit more to handle. (Fun session for me anyways on the mini. Plenty of little lined up sets to run on and practice little turns/ cutbacks.) Secondly, towards the end of our sess a pretty large size dorsal was 10 yards away and trolling right towards her and she panicked, paddling hard, death face, etc. Meanwhile, I’m 20 yards away. I yell to pull arms/legs up, and then dart towards her. Fin goes away and never returned... I grabbed her board to push it in front of me and then gently paddle us both to shore. I’m pretty certain it was some kind of shark, could be wrong, but I’ve seen both while in the water and this was definitely sharky. I’m sure uze Florida boys and girls would call us wimps, but I wasnt about to chance it with my lady, particularly her being a novice.
Saturday - surfed really fun really crowded chest high waves. Like one minute your doing two of the best turns you've done in a long time, 10 minutes later you've been burned three times in a row. Sunday - trunked it for 2+ hours just splitting a waist high peak with a friend while a crazy crowd was frothing on another section of beach 1/4 mile away. Great weekend of early summer surfing. From Saturday at the crowded spot:
Surfed 1'-2'+sets by myself and had fun today. Pretty small but smackin' the bar. I got smacked, too. Got a handful of fun rides on the 10' 50-50.
How long have you been married?? Not long, huh? And you are feeding her to the sharks already?? lol Kids today.....
same spot, same time on Saturday. Sunscreen couldn't stop some of those burns, sheesh. Very fun with some nice juice though!
Fun session this morning. Was on the fence about going. Knew there would be somthing to ride but wasn't sure if it's worth getting up at 330 for. At least not this week. I need to catch up on sleep bad but things keep coming up. Anyway a buddy of mine who has been out of the water for awhile was frothing to get wet so i went. Had alot of fun. Thigh high and breaking close to shore. Lefts were all duds. But the rights had some umph. Mini simms was eating it up. Always a good day when you get in the water. Sometimes you just need that little nudge to inspire you to go
Had a nice afternoon of surfing in Cape May on Sunday. I think I’ve surfed 3 or 4 days this month, which is extremely low for someone who’s had almost every day to surf if I wanted to. I’m not one for sitting on the beach, at least not for hours, but I enjoy being in the water just swimming when surfing conditions are poor. The water is historically cold this year, though. Not even warm enough for that. The water temp reading has been stuck on 55 for what seems like the entire month, and I don’t think it’s the buoy that’s broken. It really is that cold. And no way it’s 73 in Cape May, either. I doubt it’s even 63 down there. I can’t remember the water being 55 in the last week of June in Monmouth County, but it’s probably happened before. In a bad year it usually hits 65 right about this time or July 1st the latest.
Great pics Mitchell! I was near IRI Sunday morning, but I was sharkfishing. Wished I would have brought a board, some fun little set were coming thru with no one around! I did get 100lb sand tiger though. Still a good day!
I left my house in San Diego at 3:30 this AM. Got to 56th Street in Newport Beach at 5AM. Paddled out in the dark with only one other guy. It was pretty nuts with such a low tide. got a bunch of small ones. Got ragdolled on a few of the bigger ones. Heres a shot before I left.
Forecast looks pretty good for late afternoon/early evening tomorrow, and then into all day Friday and most of Saturday. Really dying to get out again.
Scored at Washout. waist hi for the first half of DP, waist to chest for the second half. pair of shoulder to head hi's rolled in my window. semi textured, not too much chop but likely heading in that direction this afternoon. cleaning up tomorrow so chance it straightens out for a sunset sess. lotta fun ones in long period swell. stood out, 40 yrd'r slap happy wave rightside towards the rocks. backside shoulder, hands behind, to a floater. used the fixed up Allison 7'6 swallow t and made some real use of it. slight chance tomorrow with the LB, swell's in recession after showing its face supposedly
