Caribbean side is a lot different. Some great waves over there, and more caribbean style culture like you see in the caribbean islands. I was in Puerto Viejo many years ago, but loved it. Also, really like Bocas on the Caribbean side of Panama. Really fun towns.
Puerto viejo is a great town, great break, but has some issues. Check out a surf doc, Searching For Captain Zero, never read the book but the doc was spot on.

Are there ants in the lineup? If not, no worries. The blackflies in Sebastian can take chunks of flesh during offshores.
Flies never mess with me (mosquitoes and noseeums, yes), but ants have a long history of it. They can float, hundreds to thousands of them at a time, and they will not let go of you, even while immersed. They are evil. We need a serious fire ant culling. They have overtaken the South, and they continue marching north. Central American anteaters would be helpful. NorCal doesn't have to worry about them yet, only frigid waters... 56F middle of summer is sad, so so sad... Sonoma County, CA https://www.swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/sonoma-county-california
Yeah, pretty sad. Water here was 57 yesterday, not too bad...But dropped down to 53 this morning. but man, the surf was soooo fun yesterday and only 3-5 guys out.
Plenty of sweet spots where you don't have to freeze your La Pp off, dear man, and as pretty as it is, NorCal is not one of them. Besides, thought you were in more frigid waters than NorCal? Remind me, please. Regardless, the little demons are marching your way: https://www.ars.usda.gov/southeast-...xpansion-of-the-invasive-fire-ant/california/
I guess we're in the very edge of a warm Japanese current here, so the water is pretty similar to NorCal. But 3 hrs north the water is usually 5-10 degrees colder. Coldest I've seen locally was 44, but north of here will occasionally dip into the mid 30's
No idea how you deal with it day in/day out...couldn't do it, myself. Been north of NorCal only once for surf and it was memorably pounding, but simply too cold for penguins. Not for ants, though. You don't want to step on one of these: https://www.ars.usda.gov/southeast-...tes-range-expansion-of-the-invasive-fire-ant/
