When I was a kid in the early 70s at Torrance Beach CA, there were no leashes, but dodging and maybe getting hit by run-away boards was what one had to deal with when it was crowded. Duck, dip, dive, dodge, and...duck. Generally though, if you couldn't surf and hang on to your board, you were "encouraged" to go elsewhere.
As mentioned knee leach is meant for longboarding- cross stepping for nose riding. It’s really a personal preference... I’ve had em in the past- and never really liked them too much for various reasons- mostly that I hardly ever have an issue with stepping or tripping on an ankle leash. And I do cross step and noseride often. The knee leash just felt weird for me, even after a year or so- just used to the ankle - plus it’s easier to step or kick away a leach around your ankle while riding then the knee- if you happen to step on it or whatever. Anyways- if your gonna cross step and nose ride, then try a knee leash- you may like it.. you may not idk
I might add- that I don’t have issues with my leashes getting in the way since I don’t make a habit of storing them by wrapping it around my board and fin... Since the leash material has memory- when storing my leach I lay it flat or drap it over a nail or something
I think the general rule of thumb is that the leash should be approx the same length as the board. That might help?
I prefer the dong leash. It's much safer and it feels good when the board gets away from you. Highly recommend shaving before using one though.
