Good thread. Makes me realize how little I know about safe boat handling with respect to tidal/wind conditions.
Haha don't worry man just an old superstition. My uncle is a charter boat captain on the Chesapeake and he always drilled it into my head: No bananas on the boat! ...and if he went out and wasn't catching shit (which was rare) he would start raging to everyone on the boat "I know someone ate bananas today!!". He would be dead serious too. Like Mr.bigs said, sailors have a saying or a superstition for just about everything. I don't believe in most of that mess but there is some truth to some of the old sayings like "red sky at morn, sailor take warn".
This is insane. Gotta wonder gives someone the confidence to charge into that. I choose ocean days sparingly, my cruiser isn't really made for it.
Forgive me Swellies for I hath sinned: My buddy Capt Jeff owns a 36' Grand Banks and years ago his son turned 12, and he took a bunch of his friends out fishing and asked if I could come to help keep everyone on the boat. The sun was shining brightly, Lady Gaga was blasting from the speakers, the kiddies were getting ready to drop lines off a reef, and I broke out a banana. Jack, Capt. Jeff's son, has been around boats his entire life. When he saw the banana, his eyes got huge in total disbelief, and he yelled, "Ooooohhh NO a BANANA!!!" at the top of his lungs and slapped me. I laughed my ass off and scarfed it before his dad made me throw the peel far from the boat. They solemnly assured me I had ruined the trip, we would not catch a single fish, as an entire crew of pre-teen polliwogs looked at me with death in their eyes. We each caught at least five or six yellow tailed snapper, french grunts, and porgies, and a myriad of trigger fish, file fish, blue runner, and creature feature stuff off the bottom. I won't stop my dirty little habit - I just like bananas and peanuts on a boat or before a surf, it settles my stomach.
hahaha that's awesome. The whole banana thing is a shame b/c it's the perfect food to take on a boat.
Classic. At least you admit you have no clue. Which puts you ahead of 80% of the rest of the people driving boats in NJ. First off, take the basic boat safety course. Its one day class. Then buy and learn how to read, the relevant nautical charts (thats what ocean maps are called) Then buy a Sea Tow membership. Good luck.
Serious question; What is the difference between a ship and a boat? Also, why do you park in a driveway but drive on a parkway?
Nevermind, I found out the difference between ship and boat on the interwebs. I just figured one of you nerds would do the leg work for me.
There are old captains and there are bold captains. There aren't many old bold captains. I was pretty bold in my early and mid 20s.
i think "taking" just sounds better.imagine saying like damn bro i got to go i have to leave a shit bad. hey where are u going? im going to leave a shit lol.
