I thought these were pretty goofy/kooky as well (Post 156). But I'm really only posting again because I stopped by a shop yesterday specializing in Hobie kayaks and and these type of boards (which weigh about 40 lbs. completely rigged). The pedaling mechanism on the boards is interesting and very similar to that used on their kayaks. No paddles are used, and a rudder serves for steering. On a kayak, this frees the hands for fishing which has become increasingly popular.
Still, peddling around on one of those boards is not for manly men. Maybe if I had a few beers first...

On another note... standing a Longboard up on it's tail and leaning it against a car on a windy day. I've seen... and heard... it sooooo many times. That dreadful clacking and crunching of fiberglass as a board bounces around on the pavement.

Hermosa 2005ish... Mega swell with yuge black sand death barrels. DOH+
Me and a few friends were the only ones to paddle out (since we just got there and were paddling out no matter what)
Only other guys out had a ski.

Made it out ok because there were lulls with the super long period. Got a couple of small ones and built confidence... Swung on a BIG one, got hung up in the lip and free fell to the sand. Hit the bottom pretty hard then got spun around for a while. Completely black under water with the black sand.
Eventually came up in was aonly in waist deep water. Staggered out and realized I was butt naked. Thank Wayne my legrope didn't snap so my shorts were still there and I didn't have to walk all the way back neked... But there were plenty on the beach to witness

...I heard it was small that day.

Man, Hermosa is no joke. Reminds me of some kookieness. Same deal. Just got into town. It wasn't DOH but pretty solid overhead and thick lips! We were out there as soon as we could get our boards unpacked.

I actually traveled from Hawaii for this trip. Feeling pretty confident coming out of Winter time north shore. Anyway, I paddled for my first wave and missed it. I turn around and an A frame beast was coming fast and the lip was just throwing. I did not want to throw my board so I ducked deep as possible. The lip drove my head into my knee and gave me a nice tooth puncture clear through my lip. I come up and my bro is on the shoulder laughing (as he always does when you are the one getting worked). I ended up surfing for about an hour til it was getting dark...blood was flowing but the waves were pumping. That was in 99'...same year I caught Pavones all time. That was the longest trip I have done to CR (3 wks). Every time I go back, I think about that lip and Pavones...I havn't caught it that good since!

Last week saw a guy paddle out with board shorts over his spring suit. Had to do a double take, even a triple.

So I mentioned a week or so ago that these are really becoming popular specially in cali.... sadly this guy showed up at my fav local break this morning.. no lie, he had one of these SUPs with the big 3ft metal foil on the bottom...

I was on the beach early with my son after that storm blew thru this morning... I look over and see this guy paddling out! So I figured I would stick around and watch ... seemed like he had a hard time getting it to come up out of the water, maybe not enough power in the wave...
either way - it's totally gonna be dangerous in the lineup with these things floating around... ng and they arnt even cool...

Had quite a few guys into that fad maybe around a decade ago (over full wetsuits), until we started making fun of them.
