im going to mar del plata, argentina this winter. Im taking two board. should I bubble wrap them both seperatly then ducktape them and put my suits in the bag with them or what?
i bought a soma and just used it for a trip to costa rica.... 6'6 double bag. its very light, rolls up into a sack, can sleep on it, only thing to worry about is it being punctured. on the way there held up great... no problems. on the way back i had to deflate it some to fit it in hte jumper plane to san jose.... again no problems. on the flight back some how i guess i didnt close the plugs all of the way or they deflated it on the layover flight. i got it back delfated luckley i had 2 aviso's in it and nothing happed... just make sure you close the inflation plugs and its a great bag. if your in nj you can come check mine out. overall i like it a lot and like the concept. great bag.
To get by without spending a fortune: Borrow a day bag from a friend that is significantly larger than your normal day bag for the board. Wrap board in several layers of bubble wrap or sheet foam Use pipe insulation (home depot) to cover the rails. Put a double layer on tip and tail of board. Make sure it fits in the bag. Bring an extra roll of tape to put it all back together for the flight home. Have a great time surfing your undamaged board! P.S. Check your airlines regs carefully about board length, total allowed weight, and number of boards in a bag. If they say one board, they will count the booger as a second! Whatever you do, don't buy a Delta ticket!
it will be summer down there...sorry no waves. Do not even bother bringing boards, if you are lucky enough to get a rare summer swell you can always rent a board
Hey guys 1 more thing! well i bought the tickets thursday night, and i called mexicana about the board and the website said 65 dollars each way. and of course those bastards and there stupid fees said when i called them,Oh, it 60 dollars eache SEGMENT......and im having 1 stop each way so thats 240 both ways... so do you guys think i shuold risk it and go and try to find a board to rent(i know a surfshop but i dont know iff theyll have my size board, wich ofcourse is why ive been bithing ti the person im goin with) he thinks that well find a board to rent and itll be cheaper, but 20 bucks for 8hrs? thats around the same price to bring one? what do you guys think
Has anyone else tried to Soma airbag and have any reviews? Also, what other travel bag brands do people have and recommend? Thanks.
make sure your board bag is "solid", make sure there is no wiggle room. Pack that baby as tight as possible so that the padding takes all the force and not the board. The tighter it is packed the less force it will feel since most of it will be absorbed.
Dakine make a really nice travel bag I had the 9'6 on they sold a few years back until it was stolen out of the back of my truck. Have you looked into possibly shipping the board there or just to ship it back to save money???
