Kanman - I know many that suffer with shoulder issues. Solutions range from rest/stretching to surgery. If it doesnt feel better after rest I would go to Dr before you really screw it up. Or......... its shoulder AIDs.
It's the right call man. Im the type of guy to work/surf through injuries. So i totally get it. But shoulders for us aren't too be messed with. Avoid surgery at all costs. If that means sitting out then that's what it is.
Gotta rest it a tad, give the natural healing process a chance to kick in. Then when the inflammation abates, you can stretch and then gradually rehab and strengthen. Necks are tricky, you can cause stroke if you twist or jerk it too hard. Go real easy and skip a day between therapy sessions to let the body reset on its own. Hope you get over it soon. Plan out a four to six week program so you don't go too fast. In six weeks you'll be better and stronger than ever.
An extended time out might not be a bad idea (4-6 wks) - plus by the time your ready to get back on the water the spring swells will be in full effect and a lighter suite... won’t be missing much in the next few weeks and really does beat rehab Take some time to get your boards in order and all fixed up. Wash out the wetsuite good. Take the dog for a walk on the beach or whatever...
Thanks for the moral support fellas. Hopefully when I heal, it’ll be a perfect time for some Jerz barrels and a strike mission or two down South. In the meantime I’ll live vicariously through you guys and at least get out to take some shots of my buds.
Appointment postponed until this afternoon. Will report back shortly. Based on my own diagnostics and analysis of the clavicle, I’m claiming grade II AC Joint separation with 6 weeks rehab. We will see shortly. Hoping for the best...
Haha fingers crossed it isn’t a higher grade. Joint is portruding a bit, but not crazy. Pain has lessened with rest and ice. Biggest concern is labrum tear... My symptoms kind of match both. I’ll find out in a half hour.
So I didn’t have the AC separation, like I had hoped for. He believes I had a subluxation of the shoulder or a partial dislocation...based on tests of my ROM and the way I injured myself. Essentially I could have posterior or inferior labral tears. That’s exactly what I was really hoping I would NOT have. I have to get a non-contrast MRI scheduled and then follow up in 10 days... He said that since I’m over 20, chances are that I won’t need surgery. But, I could. Imaging will paint a better picture of the damage. In the meantime I was recommended to rest and do light PT work. Not stoked right now. Tough start to 2019 with that and other life things happening. “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional”
Bummer, I have torn my labrum before, in both shoulders. The one in my right shoulder healed back all by itself over time. The left one is another story. The number of dislocations and severity of the one on my last trip to PR really set it back what seems like permanently. It's better today than it was the last 3-4 years but not by much, all it takes is falling the wrong way, taking a beating that rag dolls me and it's gonna pop back out and cause more damage. I've been fortunate as of late to keep that from happening but it's always in the back of my mind.
Did you get surgery, DP? Arthroscopic could be an option. If I’m out longer than 2-3 months, I’m gonna go nuts.
Shoulders are extremely tricky when it comes to surgical 'solutions.' Last resort, Kan; way, way last resort.
Smart move. Kan remember one thing, many many doctors push surgery when there are other options. DP and yankee said it and I'll say it again, surgery is last resort. I once was told i needed surgery, went for a pre surgery exam i believe (diffrent doctor). He asked what was going on and i realized i couldn't exactly explain why i was getting surgery. Doctor said surgery so i figured he knows best. The doctor giving the pre surgery exam or whatever really laid into me for being dumb. Rightfully so. Second opinions, alternatives to surgery, search them out. A close friend of mine is actually a physical trainer of sorts. For instance if your having back pains he will get you in the gym, watch you walk or whatever (he watches the way your body specially works as a whole) and find the source of the pain. Hard to explain... especially coming from me. Iv seen first hand and heard of many diffrent clients....it's really amazing what he does. He calls it body mechanics. Travels all over working with clients. Got into it when he had a pretty serious but rare condition and healed himself from a wheelchair due to his unwillingness and inability to get/pay for a crazy surgery. Keep us updated and if you need i'll put you in contact with him. At the very least hear what he has to say about viable approaches
