Rate Winter 2018-19

I keep saying I’m going to drive north when the south swell is running. Deep angled S swells generally run up the beach and are drifty. I’m always seeing the goods up there with ideal conditions!!!

 

LB , did u shape this one recently ?

 

Delmarva - I'd give it a 8. Like said before, it's been really consistent small/medium fun swells November to March. I've never surfed as much as I did January through February, the weather systems/swells just kept coming week after week. I can't recall any prolonged flat spells.

I think the other part that made it really good IMO was that the spots I usually surf have had much better sandbars this year compared to the last few years. You had options for which equipment you wanted to ride and where you wanted to surf. A lot of days you'd see shortboards, funshapes, and longboards at the same break.

It's a little tedious, but I keep a surf journal so I can reflect back on past years.

It ain't tedious. We do it too. It's called the Who's been surfing Thread. It's pretty much awesome.

I just looked back at the posts for the winter there. I agree with others. Lot of south swell. Lot of west wind. I ducked for wind cover on most surfs.

 

That's another thing that killed this winter for me. Lots of west wind. With enough time you definitely could make it work but time is somthing i didn't have much of this winter.

I actually prefer those big noreaster swells. Lots of drift but when it's big here i like the swell to have some east in it. Seems to make it more manageable.

This winter wasn't terrible. But we have had some great winters in years past so it's definitely not competing with those in my opinion

This winter sucked up here in the North. Overwhelming reason was continuous lateral winds blowing everything to poop. And I mean the 40MPH+ type winds. And we had very few large swells.
Hopefully we get destructive hurricanes this year that wipe out the Southeast, then destroy New Jersey, and then head out to sea, stop and spin for a few days to give NH surf, then head straight to western Africa and wipe out the Ebola carrying native populations and villages..

Down here in South East I'd say 5 or 8 depending on who you are. IMHO the SE is in the worst position to get winter swells. If it's a low pulling off the coast is has to be pulling off from the OBX or further south to give us the goods and that usually doesn't happen after Jan. There have been a couple winters here that were completely flat for Jan and Feb. BUt you can see swell marching to Fla. Later March and April and May are usually much more fun here with south windswells and trades.
We've had some really fun shortboard days this winter but not tons. There have however, been tons of great knee to thi or even waist hi log days completely glassy without a soul around. Most of these days happen when SI says it's going to be flat and I think people just can't be bothered in the winter once you need a 4/3. I'd say I've surfed an average of 3x a week this winter and only a couple of the sessions were total crap...so I'm a happy 8 w a mix of logs and fishes. If you only surf shortboards you are prob thinking 4 or 5 maybe even less. Also took a trip to Nic midwinter and got some fun but not amazing surf. cheers

 

19 th swell , although the weakest , it was quality for the am go out .The year started with a fresh dose of arctic water . The late Nov swells being the biggest also greated us with arctic water . Those temps never budged , perhaps in the high 30 s for the duration .

 

It sucked. Not really from a surfing perspective, just kind of an overall feeling.
