Hipster leg rope exclusion to leash laws

I was hoping I might be grandfathered in... guess not.

A friend of mine ended up at the hospital on Sunday with two broken ribs and a punctured lung thanks to a hipster chick riding a log without a leash. Got him good. File that under the heading of nobody ever gets hurt by leashless boards and hipsters never lose their boards. Cost him an upcoming trip to Puerto Rico and some nice hospital bills.

 

That's a wake up call, damn!

I was paddling out after a wave on Sunday and some kook hipster dude with no leash lost his board and I was lucky to have not been in the wrong spot. It happened fast, I just finished a ride and was headed back out, and the ride didn't connect all the way so I was still inside the tail end of the group of surfers on the sandbar. He ate it halfway down the wave and the board went all the way in with the whitewater. Just missed me.

I guess I should have rode the whitewater in some more before paddling out for my own safety? I dunno the answer short of culling.

 

I don't care how good your board control is, going leashless in waves on any consequence serves absolutely no purpose. The occasional cheater 5 you'd be doing can be done with a leash anyways. Almost got bowling balled by a guy's - who is a good surfer - log paddling out a few weeks ago. Spare me the "surfing leashless requires me to learn to control my board, which is how surfing originally started" bull. Go leashless down the beach if you want. I like having my teeth intact. Problem is many leashless surfers I've seen are good surfers and telling them to F off isn't as easy as a hipster kook. They should be smart enough to know all it takes one closeout and they're swimming in

 

Only go leashless on the smallest days.

I don't ever want to lose a board and then helplessly watch the wave of the session go by as I'm swimming in

I agree that wearing a leash is a good idea for the safety of others... and wearing one is really not a big deal. I would say that most ppl who don’t wear one are doing it more for the show off factor then anything else.


As far as longboards go- I have very rarely had a problem with my leash while walking the nose or nose riding. If you can walk on a board you can step around / on / thru a leash, no problem. I can’t even remember anytime where I legitimately tripped on my leash while walking... not getting your leash tangled on a pop up is a different store.

I understand that not wearing one can improve your surfing - in that you’ll be more inclined to make the wave or kick out - but maybe if we didn’t relay on our leash all the time there wouldn’t be a problem

All that being said - I have 3 heavy LBs without leash plugs.. so I do surf them leashless but only when it’s not crowded... if it is a bit crowded- only if the waves are peeling and makeable, not close outs. Along with not wanting to hurt anyone... I don’t want to ding my boards!!

 

Install a "through the boart" leash loop.... up through the fin box and out the deck. It's easy, looks old school, and works!

Love hate...Do y'all think wearing a leash slows you down or inhibits performance in anyway?
I have never been able to feel the difference speed wise. Only when I am on a LB doing 360 walks or switchups the leash gets wrapped around my legs sometimes. Started wearing a calf leash a while back to minimize, but still happens. I always wear one with my short board, and most times with my LB.

Not a fan. Nobody should have mustaches except for law enforcement, Hitler, Tom Sellek and my dad. Only females should wear tight jeans, unless its serves a functional purpose ie: rodeo clown.
Because of hipsters PBR is now more expensive. Flannel is for lumberjacks. And just because you can take up the whole lane on your $2000 fixed gear bike does not mean you should.

Flannel has always been part of me when not working--since 1969. Did not need it living in PR.

Guy is a good surfer and he is looking at probably 6 months before he'll be able to surf again.

 

Turns out the incident was caught on video. You will see he duckdives a wave as the board comes cartwheeling in and spears him. Result: Three days in the hospital, two badly broken ribs, punctured lung and a missed surf trip.

I'm the last one to suggest litigation but with the vids and the hospital bills and lost trip I wonder if he has a case for small claims court.

 

Down at 2nd Beach in RI the seaweed is just brutal in the summer so you need to constantly clean off 5 lb. of drag when you paddle out BUT it's also super crowded so you really have to have a leash (or paddle a foamie I guess)

That's the only time/place I've ever wished I didn't have a leash.

 

I remember once my buddy's younger brother ran over a surfer in the trough with his windsurfer on a big day at Reef Road, back in the 80's. He put a slice on the poor kids ass cheek from his skeg. He was flying through the impact zone and couldn't react.

He had the fortitude and gumption to visit the guy in the hospital and offer his sincere apologies. He never windsurfed there on big days againne, and was not given a beat down, and that is how it was done back in the day.

Screw the lawyers, if the kook didn't apologize proper, then he needs to be skooled.
