does localism still exist

This stretch of jersey doesn't really know this happy happy joy joy of which you speak. Most breaks are full of guys you would call a nasty piece of work. I'm not feelin' the love.
I try all my life to be the hey guy love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness self-control and it doesn't always work cause guys gotta get their waves. Sad. I know.

 

I can't answer that question as I do everything I can to avoid others. I will never get 45 guys all elbow to elbow next to the pier with guys mad up above casting at them. Move over 50 yards and yes the wave is not as good but you are alone. Plus I like to sing Lady Ga Ga songs and others don't seem to like that.

 

I am sure you don't have to work too too hard to get others to avoid you <grin>. As for singing Lady Gaga, that is reason enough for on-site shooting.
Micro biologist use petri dishes to determine which antibiotic works best for individual pathogens. When you go surfing, you may have a zone of inhibition surrounding you?? just saying....lol

 

At this time of year, there's really next to no one else at my break, especially during the week. If there are waves on the weekend, there might be a guy or two or three within a block of me. There are several peaks to choose from on the bar. It's tide dependent for the most part (yesterday was an exception). When more people start showing up next month, I'm actually friendly. Some Winters I feel like Tom Hanks in Castaway. I even have the same volleyball with the bloody face on it. Even in the Summer, the SUPS, kayaks, and the D-bag Kite surfers are but a minor annoyance. If conditions dictate that I have to go to OCNJ, Cape May, or LBI, then I give the locals the respect they've earned. I look for spots where I can get waves without having to jockey or jostle. I'm too old for that crap.

 

Look up Lady Ga Ga on Howard Stern and tell me she aint the best. Me and Chavez are actually go to see her in New Jersey soon.

I'm not quick to judge and daily live through exactly what you describe. The title of the thread is localism not regulation and that's only what I'm referring to. Also, what I meant by travel is not always hopping a plane but instead of surfing the pier go down to the inlet or instead of staying in Virginia Beach head down to the OBX. I think you understand what I'm saying. When you do that and now you're the out-of-towner, to me, that should give you some perspective. You should always show respect but never be intimidated to surf anywhere that's not private. That's all I saying.

 

I've rented houses in Avon countless times and I could count the good sessions I've had there on one hand with plenty of fingers left over. If you're in Avon you pretty much gotta drive someplace else. I keep going back there though because its so convenient. I've had more good sessions down in Hattaras Village by the ferry dock than I've had in Avon.

 

Thanks CJ, that makes sense to me. It is convenient as you say and there are lots of nice houses for rent in that area and they are pretty inexpensive. I don't mind driving 5 minutes South or 10-15 minutes North if I have to. When we were there the surf wasn't good really anywhere due to some serious wind cranking most of the time. I looked at lots of spots and most weren't working. I'll keep this in mind next trip for sure.

 

From a convenience standpoint, Avon is excellent.

Just a thought - wasn't localism the natural result of long term regulation against large groups of people? As well as the immediate implementation of regulation against people who aren't well known? When I give it more than a passing thought about what localism is, that's what I come up with. So really, the main thing that has changed over the years would be the use of surfing skill and fitness to deny people waves (and maybe some good old school heckling) as opposed to the threat of or use of physical violence, slashing tires, waxing windshields, etc.

I should add that you don't necessarily have to go far out of Avon to find great surf. My best day ever on the outer banks was only a 5 minute drive out of town at a place surfers drive past all day long......and there were only 4 of us there on this sandbar that fired all day long. Meanwhile Buxton was equally good that day except it was packed at every peak.

 

Wow, really nice waves and pics! Is that one of those little pull off spots on the side of the road where you walk over the dunes through a small path?

 

Good point got me thinking. The nj localism was early 60's the state decided to pass legislation to privatize beaches to keep out any non-wasps, setup beach associations who now own their beach and regulate with beach badges that only homeowners could purchase at the time. My dad was refused because they thought he was italian. 1961.
