Leash length.

My go to shop is like this. Regular old leash, no diffrent then a creature's or any other brand. They just throw there logo on the strap and boom.... fraction of the price of name brand leashes.

 

You're talkin' to a guy who grew up watching his dad straighten out nails he'd pull out of old lumber and save them in his "used nail bucket." LOL! It's a mentality cultivated by generations of poverty!

Dude you should see my tool bags. My main tool bag has random screws and electrical fittings and random things that don't belong there laying all over. My brazing/soldering box has scrap pieces of copper, stubs of brazing rod that you'll burn your fingers if you use. I don't throw anything out.

Im known as the guy who has everything in my company. If you need a random ass fitting chances are it's in my bag. I never go out to my truck if i need somthing. Just go digging and I'll find what i need.

 

Leash strings that attach the leash to the boart have been a problem for me in the past, but not since an incident a few decades ago. Ever since I use fresh nylon tied proppere.

But back in the day I remember leash going plunk on the way outside after unsuccessfully ducking a macking Reef Road clean up set. Thought the leash snapped, which wouldn't have been the first time that happened out there.

Swam/boduysurfed in and was relieved to see it was just the old string that snapped. So I scoured the weed line for fishing line, nylon rope, anything, and found a suitable string and tied it up and paddled back out. It snapped the first time I lost the board, it was sooo brittle. Did it againne and it happened againne, same thing. Did quite a bit of swimming that day.

 

Happened to me againne years later at Pumphouse (I grew old and forgetful lol), a fisherman lent me his knife and I cut some of my drawstring off my boardshorts and McGuivered it.

 

BTW, not a fan of a LB leash on a SB in "big" waves. Tried it once at Reef Road on a DOH day, it slowed the board down too much. It would have to be TOH plus for it to be a good idea. IMO

 

Agreed, plus if it's really that big, your 6' leash will stretch a couple feet on it's own lol

 

I had this happen to me. String snapped, swam after the board and rigged somthing up. It snapped. Rigged it up again. After alot of swimming and rigging i gave up. Now i have a stock of leash ropes in my truck.

 

I know a guy who could help you guys with your leash tieing needs... he usually checks everyone’s knot before surfing to make sure they are tied correctly- for safety sake

Leash selection is a triangulation of leash length, leash diameter and wave size or power. And buying a quality leash with a regular replenishment cycle. I save my old ones for small, everyday east coast days and use of good ones for juicier days. And don't leave them out in the sun and wash them off (UV rays and salt water are killers).
