With my bad knee, I'm definitely moving through space at a slower rate in 2019 than I was... say... in 1989.
Yeah man, time has flew by. All these guys saying your young wait till your 50.... not saying they're wrong. But in my opinion, being closer to 30 than 29 in my case, I'm not young. Compared to 50 sure. But my body has taken alot of abuse. Hell when I'm not surfing I'm literally trying to or getting choked/joints wrenched on. I can't do what i could do in my early 20s. At least not the same way. Iv found it extremely important to listen to my body and take care of it differently then i did in my 20s. Strange middle ground between young and old where we got to learn and adapt to how we take care of ourselves. My shoulders actually bothering me pretty good today. Young me would of trained again tonight and Sunday. Smarter than that now. Got to rest today and tomorrow and assess the situation Sunday. Even if it's all good, i'll be going light Sunday
Oh man sorry to hear Kanman... hoping you have a speedy recovery... maybe it will be a bit quicker since you seem pretty healthy in general. On a second note- I totally agree with the above^^^ somewhere in your late 20’s to 30’s things start to catch up with you. But knowing that- and keeping that in mind can help from over doing it... and watching what your doing. Like when your paddling- concentrate on your paddling technique, not just paddling as fast as you can. And that whole lifting heavy weights above your shoulders that old man Barry mentioned... yea it’s a reality Anyways, that being said, don’t rush the recovery, let it heal up good! I hope it’s really quick! There’s always gonna be more waves...
After about an hour and a half on the fish in a 5 mil yesterday, my "pop up" became just an "up." At 30, I could have gone twice that long, and would have easily had a two-session day. I totally agree with having a light day when you're joints are telling you to. Rest is every bit as important as training.
As you age, the pop-up is usually the first thing to really suffer - that ability to seamlessly drop in and extend yourself down the wave all in one smooth motion. Sections that used to be makeable can roll right by as I make what feels now like a multi-stage stand up process. Some days I still got it, and other times it's like old man winter standing up for the first time after emerging from hibernation.
Yankee put it best...what used to be a nice fluid motion is like unfolding a rusty ironing board now LOL Yeah those extra few milliseconds (or longer) on a steep drop can make the difference between glory and a dislocated front shoulder. I'm surfing softer waves than in days long ago, but still having lots of fun, that's for sure.
Charles Barkley attempted a comeback in the NBA. He was training with Michael Jordan, because The Legend was also plotting his comeback with the WashWizards. Barkley lamented, "Man, Michael kept getting stronger. But I kept getting more tired!" End of Sir Charles comeback.
So the surgery was a breeze. Aside from the lack of sleep the night before and nausea from the anesthesia, everything went great. Came out of the OR in a massive sling/ ice wrap. Had a nerve block in all day yesterday, which kept me from any kind of pain. It just so happened to wear off right before bed, and I’ve continued with a very dull aching pain. Meds help a little, but it’s nothing I can’t handle. Far from comfortable, yet not dying. Post op later today and then continuous rehab until I get to start PT in 4 weeks. Doc says I got 5 anchors put in and had a very large tear. Promises I’ll be back shredding in no time though. Yewww.
My left shoulder after surgery (2009). Mountain bike crash in Germany. All alone, no phone and had to walk 4 Kliks to get to a farmhouse. Shattered the head of the humerus into 12 pieces (nuttin funny bout it) and broke the shaft in 2 places. All metal still in place. Forecast was pretty poor for returning to the water. Go to PT and figure out what they want you to do, take it easy and start to do it at home. Then after a few months start swimming (I swam in a circle the first few time I tried it) No pain, no gain...Dont puss out like my buddy who ended up with a frozen shoulder. He just had a fake metal shoulder put in so he stated "Surfing is over for me" again...Puss.. Also, start yoga..... I can raise my arm straight up over my head and still paddle well. I am an old fart (61) and can popup and surf in pretty good size waves. Not 23 ft as in Belmar but I'll hit 8-10. Good luck dude I
Good to hear the surgery went well. Hope you've got a comfy recliner to relax on. Pick up some Sleep Ezz or other over the counter sleep aid - they help for the late night insomnia. Also - no body told me this till later but it'll be a few days before you'll be able to poo. Something to do with the anesthesia they give you so it's normal. Time to binge watch some TV series. I did Breaking Bad. Great series.
That’s pretty bad ass. It looks like the shell of a porcupine. I respect your discipline to get through that and appreciate the advice. Pain has definitely increased since my nerve block ran out. Not a fan of the meds because it makes me drowsy, so I’m just dealing with it right now. Sucks, but tolerable. Have slept like an infant over the last day. Doc has me doing shoulder shrugs, bicep curls and hand raises since day two. It ain’t fun, but it’s gotta get done. Definitely going to take the PT seriously. Here’s a pic of my 5 anchors/sutures post-op. The carnage beforehand was pretty gnarly. Not gonna show that.
I appreciate that, LB! Gonna live vicariously through you guys in the short term. Keeping these spirits high. No time for negativity.
Cool pics. it is amazing what they can do with orthopedic surgeries now a days.....As swabby said, "hard to poo. Something to do with the anesthesia" also the pain meds will block you up even if you drink lots of water. I have had multiple injuries/surgeries 2 ACL, 2 minuscus repairs, bicept tendon rupture/repair, Foot tendon repair after having a knife go in the bottom and out the top.....ah that's enough. One doc told me to start a regiment of either Colate/duicilax/docusate which are all over the counter stuff and it really helped for the week or two I was on pain meds......
That’s funny. I’ve gotten stopped twice and escorted to side room once to prove that the metal things at my hips were really my hips and not weapons. No lie. I asked them about if they do this all the time because implants are pretty common nowadays, and I just got the frosty fish eye. I do understand that it’s NOT common for a guy in middle age to have them though so I was cool. Good luck Kan. I’ll be reopening this thread after Christmas as ive said - hopefully by then I’ll have a job where I’m going to be able to function with little use of arms for much more than basic stuff...
