...and the US consumer continues to purchase this stuff.

 

Our country sells very little of our own stuff here.

either we no longer manufacture it, or we export it under massive tariffs, giving citizens of foreign countries little incentive to buy our merchandise (unless they're wealthy).

Additionally, many American companies outsource their manufacturing to other countries thanks to NAFTA. Whenever I buy "American" car parts, they inevitably come from Mexico or some other 3rd world hole.

Thus, the yuge trade deficit.

We've known about it for years, but never did anything about it.
