It seems the schools nowadays are more and absurdly concerned about transgender and gender determination issues.
Despite all the fuss about man being fully responsible for causing global warming and other widespread environmental issues, the littering problem persists. It's not a matter of ignorance. People in this country know but too many just don't care. They're irresponsible and don't want to be "inconvenienced".
From what I've seen, going out to the beach to admonish and educate inebriated offenders is likely to result in violent verbal and physical confrontations.
Again, so much of this starts at home.

Not trying to sound to negative or non supportive but heres what I've noticed.

When I've seen (beach clean up) groups picking up trash on the beach I've also heard the same people who leave trash on the beach say to one another ... here they come to get our trash and then they yuk it up like they are doing there part by giving the trash removal volunteers something to do.

I no longer pick up other peoples garbage sadly because i don't think thats a solution that works. I don't have the answer to the problem .. I wish I did.

The problem is much bigger then littering on the beach... we can cover up the problem and try to make ourselves sound better by doing good deeds... but sadly the problem is our culture and the direction its going. Everyone does what they think it right, there is no more morals or rule of law.

Has it not occurred to anyone that the VA beach shooting has really not made national head lines? The deadliest one in the past year?

Could it be that our culture is now becoming desensitized to these kinds of events?? What's next?

Very sad very sad, not just our culture but the event its self and the families who have lost loved ones.

It's sad what happened, but pretty sure it made national head lines. I do think people have become desensitized to these events, until it happens to them or someone they love, It's just another tragedy in a long line of tragedies in the world.

When it happens so close to home, it's different...at least it seems that way.
Very shortly after the shootings (late Friday afternoon), we were getting calls from son in So. Korea, daughter on her way home from Thailand, as well as from family and friends in WA, CA, TX, AL, and NY. Concerning some aspects of the event, they were getting more info than we were locally.
Most of the main section of Sunday's Virginian-Pilot newspaper was devoted to the shootings and the victims.

Yeah, I know what you mean, in FL we've had the Stoneman Douglas HS / Parkland shooting and the Pulse Nightclub shooting and the Ft. Lauderdale airport shootings in just the past couple years. All mass shootings. They all seem close to home IMO, regardless of where it happens. I feel the same way if it happens in VA or if it happens in FL. The one in Vegas was particularly awful and a major cover up if you ask me. But I digress.

    It's Obama's fault...
No, you're right. It's our society and the direction - misdirection - it has taken.
We've become weak and spoiled due to having so much that's taken for granted, our crumbling moral foundation, blurred behavior standards of what is considered right and wrong, a lack of personal responsibility and accountability, a pervasive false sense of entitlement, impatience and a general disrespect for others, overreacting in murderous rages to irritations and setbacks. Heck, even gender identification and roles have become unclear.

Sorry. I'll get off my soapbox now...

Last week was not a good one for VB. We made international news for the "Floatopia" Memorial Day weekend beach mess and the shootings.

Thanks, Betty. I was unfamiliar with this report. I see there were 4 illness reports from VB.

    Yes, I totally agree....

and to answered Unfurled- I follow the new very closely... it did make headlines, but my point is that I have heard more about it today, then I did Friday or over the weekend...

Also, I may or may not be 15yrs old... but I surf BELMAR (the best surf on the continental USA) and that's all that matters.

Sadly, it's the deal we have made with the devil. If you want to have guns in your society, then there will be a cost in lives - as simple and tragic as that. All I can hope for is that my family and friends can go through our lives and not be directly impacted by a random shooting. Statistically we should be fine, but who knows. We're not changing any of the variables behind these mass shootings, so no reason they shouldn't keep occurring over and over and over again...

I disagree that it's a deal with the devil. It's not the guns that are bad. If it weren't for guns we wouldn't have this great, free country we have today. Take away our guns and you have Venezuela. The real issue is mental health. That's where 90% of these shootings stem from. A lot of people aren't happy, plain and simple. Their lives must feel meaningless to them, so they figure everybody else's is too. It's a very complex issue that can't be solved with gun control legislation. It has to be dealt with from the core of the issue and that's mental health.

When I think about what's wrong with society, I think about this quote.

"Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

Apropos of nothing & not aimed at anyone:

Seems like a lotta folks expect Life, stuff, goods & services, everything, they expect it handed it to them on a platter. The only person responsible for you is staring back at you from the mirror. There's a lotta folks in America that don't get this.

There's also a lot of hard-working people who understand that Life is a marathon not a sprint. You earn what you get, you get back what you put in, the harder one works the luckier one becomes. Those folks aren't whining about being lost or can't afford a Lexus or can't afford to live in the wealthiest part of town. And those hard-working folks are the ones who win the long race.

One man's humble opinion based upon a lot of scar tissue & running companies aka the HR gift of experience with employees both good & not-so-good.

While I do agree that just banning guns is not the answer, this is a bit of a stretch

It wouldn't take long if there's socialist / communist dictators in charge. If the citizens have no way of resisting, they are left powerless to those who have the guns. It's simple really.

You really think that if one of the wacky socialists wins the only thing that will prevent the USA from becoming Venezuela is the fact that some people have guns?

Venezuela was one of the wealthiest Countries in the Western Hemisphere, after a very short time with Maduro in power look what has happened there. They are powerless. They have nothing. They are F'ed! If you don't think that could happen here, you're crazy. We've gotten very comfortable with our way of life because things are good and have been generally good for our entire life. It doesn't take much for that all to go to shit. Use others lessons in failure to avoid the same mistakes.
