I think it is not far fetched to see the US end up like Australia with respect to gun laws. But, it won’t happen overnight. I have read through their laws and it would be a monumental change for US (NRA, 2nd etc).

I’m not saying it’s impossible for the US to turn to shit. I’m just saying that I don’t think it’s not happening because some people have guns... Again, I’m also not saying people having guns is bad

I hear you. I just believe there is a reason why it’s one of the most important rights we have.

IMO If we wanted to end up like Venezuela, the first thing we would do is give up our right to carry a fire arm, then everybody would turn over their guns to the government. Then the socialist shitty policies take their toll on the economy, we end up in a depression and people end up starving and fighting for survival. Living in poverty with no guns or way to fight back against an oppressive regime.

Its impossible to arrest and detain the millions in this country who would refuse to turn over the guns they have. Your new era civil war would consume the u.s long before everyone would turn over the weapons they have. What works for one country may or may not work for another. Additionally most people in the u.s don't know or even understand their rights and that ignorance is what fuels their anger. just my view.

The Democrats proved that their chosen, deliberate ignorance of the Constitution as on display in the Kavanaugh mauling is their chosen path to attempt to take power.

    Be concerned. Be very concerned.

I can't help but think the increase in these mass shootings coincides with societies increase use of anti depressents and, yes, the internet. Even the damned Chantix commercial talks about depression and suicidal thoughts as side effects, think I'd rather smoke.
Definitely didn't have these shootings growing up, but we didn't have one in four on Zoloft and everyone staring at a screen, as I am now.
Take away the pills, not the guns.

Agreed, that’s part of the mental health aspect I’m referring to. It’s definitely one of the reasons.

Regarding the collection of guns from citizens. I know a lot of guys like to picture themselves as a civil war hero or they think they’ll fight back and keep their guns, but reality is most guys will be caught off guard and they won’t have a choice. They will just ambush you and take them. Once the guns are in their possession you won’t be taking all that noise then. You’ll do what they say, and you’ll like it.

So...mental health evaluations before a firearm can be purchased?

Also...I'm all about the 2nd Amendment being maintained, but is a .50 caliber, an AK-47 or m4a1 really necessary for "home defense"?

Once govt is permitted to abrogate the US Constitution, there will be no limit to what we the sheeple will lose in terms of civil rights.

The cause needs to be addressed not the effect.

This is where we disagree... You think that people having guns are stopping the govt from doing what they want.. I don’t think that’s the case.

I think a mental health evaluation is a good idea. But it’s a slippery slope too. Lots of people have depression and anxiety but aren’t a threat to themselves or others. While others have something more severe and are clearly a danger. Then you have those who appear to be safe but are really a ticking time bomb.

So who decides? Who does it affect? What’s on the list of disqualifying illnesses and what’s on the list of acceptable illnesses. Are there any that get a pass? Is it a lifetime ban or can there be change of ruling with improved behavior? Etc.

It’s a deterrent. It gives the people a fighting chance if it ever came down to it. But the outcome probably wouldn’t be so hot. I think mainstream America will vote to protect their rights. Trump 2020

The last thing I want to do is turn over more power and control to the government.

It's a slippery slope. Repeal of the 2nd Amendment could cause another Civil War.

Anti-depressants aren't good, but why their current widespread use? The problem goes deeper than the pills themselves.
Why are many in our country so depressed, anxious, stressed and unhappy? We live in America; we really should be grateful.
I think it's due to a combination of factors, some of which have been mentioned here.
We've always had guns in this country. We didn't always have these mass shootings.

    It’s pretty widespread.

What’s the stat, something like 85% of the shooters had some form of anti-depressant in their systems regardless of age. In other words, prescribed meds from some ‘professional’ to deal with the world that the maladjusted asshat just cannot cope with once mummy isn’t there anymore and / or when someone finally tells them their work isn’t good or just plain says ‘no’ to them. Not kiddn. These shooters are emotional cripples.

Seriously, the shootings are essentially the extrapolated downside result of the everyone gets a trophy culture that the women in America have promulgated over the past 20 or so years.
