I'm looking to go to UHM next year and now I'm weighing out my options on housing. I need help deciding if I would rather live around campus and get to class and the party scene easier... or live North Shore and commute. Surf is my main priority, but if it's still fun around Honolulu, I would probably choose South Shore... MY QUESTION IS... How does South Shore compare to North Shore in terms of how often swell comes, average size, form, city vibes... and also college town lifestyle? Any info would help a bunch, preciate it.
I would suggest you to live in town near campus. You would have to make that drive everyday from the north shore to campus.... so wouldnt it make sense to make the drive from town to the north shore when the swell was up . North shore is up in the winter, and down in the summer. South shore is bigger in summer, and smaller in the winter, but there is pretty much always something to ride on the south shore. If you are spending money to go to UNH, dont you think school should be your priority?
I lived on the south shore for a semester. The south shore has Wakiki and Honolulu nightlife. Tons of bars and night clubs. As of the surf, I surfed the south shore up to about 12ft. Most of the time it was just head high or a little bigger. The surf spots on the south shore are VERY crowded, but one again that is where almost everyone on the island lives. It is only a 45 min drive to the north shore, so if I was you I would stay around UHM. Plus most of the time the NS is to big to surf during the season. There were plenty of times it was 15-30ft range for a couple of days, so unless your a pro your going to have to wait for the beginning of a swell or the end.
Appreciate the advice y'all. I really should keep school the priority, but as I always say, "swell is swell lol." If I comb the beach, do you think I'll find a clean unpacked spot somewhere?
No, Im currently a student there. Maybe a semi uncrowded day, but for the most part you will be with a large crowd every time
PM North shore action from shore was HOT HOT HOT. Big bass bursting everywhere. Lots of mung though...
Dp Interesting. I am starting grad school out there in the fall, so I will be focusing on classes, but would still like to get wet more often then not. Is dawn patrol beneficial, or is it pretty much just packed sunrise to sunset? Also, did yall take your boards with you out there... or did you buy when you got over there? Im trying to decide for myself...thanks. Just realized how old this thread is... any update on how things are going andyb?
