I’m adding surfing to my families outdoor adventure. I’ve bought four out of five members used boards including myself. Momma won’t surf, she brings the snacks. Don’t know much about anything actually related to surfing so hoping you all can take on a newbie and give me some tips. Had a longboard that I felt didn’t support me well. 9’x21.5x2.5. Today I bought a used Vicking that is 9-3x 22.5x3 but it came With side fins but no center fin. I’m 52 so not looking to do tricks just wanna have fun with my kids. I’ve searched online for suggestions on a fin and can’t find anything. Can you help? Oh yeah, I live in south Florida-Miami so I’m looking at small surf unless I go north which we do frequently.

    Welcome
If you guys are all that new to it. Almost any fin will do. If you lose the side fins a 9 to 10 inch fin. If you want to keep them in, go a little shorter. Post sone pics of the
Board and we could give you better advice.

Have fun out there! Be mindful of others. When yous get a surf in post a story about it.

Thank you. My board has original FCS fins and I can’t find them that long. Any suggestions on where to look without spending a ton?

Typically the center fin on a longboard isn't a FCS style fin-box, it is possible though.

Does the center fin-box look like this:

    Or this:

Why on earth does anyone build a 9 foot board with an FCS thruster setup? I see it in 8 foot funshapes and shake my head like WTF but ok its a funshape who cares. On a 9'3" longboard? Nuts.

OP...get a big FCS fin and throw it in the back. search for:
    REPLACEMENT GMB-5 replacement center fin.

It should run about $30. They don't make any thing over 5 inches for that kind of a setup. It'l be fine.

I appreciate all the feedback. Is it reasonable to get It changed to a box instead?

Tony. With the age and shape of that board and for what you're doing with it for its intended purpose just enjoy surfing with your kids I'm practicing. As you progress look into finding a board for your particular style or where you want to be later in your surfing career.

It it were me, I'd slap any old FCS style fin in there and ride it. If you're just starting to surf, you'll never notice the difference.

Yeah get a G-5 and ride it from the tail. Maybe shuffle a tad but do not go too far towards the nose, the back fins may pop out. I had a 9'0" Serge Rhino Tuff Stiletto that rode like a shortboard on steroids in big clean surf. My wife destroyed it after a Christmas boat parade blow out party, but that's a story for another day. (I live down here in the Dirty Souff too).

Then find ye a log with a fin box and trade that one in. And good luck with the fambiley TonyC, they'll be surfing circles around you soon.

That board would go like greased lightning with one of Roy's BLEF fins.
