Second session from 10-12 after my zoom meeting yesterday was pretty fun. Non-stop parade of dolphins swimming their way South. Cormorants flying South too. They are trying to tell us something.
Ill trade for a couple of carne asada burritos from Alberto's, with a side of that green chili sauce and some of their pickled carrots and jalepeno's. I miss that sh!t I hope Alberto's is still around, I might be dating myself
Great run of waves , hell trip s to NY with some windows locally has made the month of Sept special .
What's the name of the joint in PB (I think) that has a line around the block when they open in the morning and they serve until the run out of food?
Rubio's. Like fish tacos? San Diego has the goods, but go down to the marina in Ensenada for The Real Deal
I remember when it was just Roberto's. But they got so wildly popular over the years, hundreds of knockoffs with names like Roberto's, Dagberto's, Hilberto's, Adelberto's and every other __berto's imaginable popped up all over the city. Most are really good, but not the same as Roberto's... kinda like buying Oakley sunglasses in Tijuana. Just cheap imitations. What really makes me chuckle is when someone rocks up to Roberto's and asks if they have anything "vegetarian" lol
There was an Alberto's around Escondido, San Marco's area, then when I lived in Encinitas there was one right down the road on 101, across from the La Paloma and just down from the Saloon. This was around 2003? I think? The last decade or so I've been out to California I haven't made it much farther than Carlsbad (south) always obligations with the family, which is cool though. Is the La Paloma even there still? I know it had historical status when I was there. They actually played surf flicks, and had a Rocky Horror night every weekend. I miss Encinitas, if I could have found solid work I wouldn't have left, but everything happens for a reason.
LOL Nah bro. This is the place I was thinking of. I had to ask my wife the name. http://www.konoscafe.com/
Yes, the Paloma is still there. I saw both Andy Irons: Kissed by God and Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton at the Paloma. Good times. Across the street is now Filbertos. The best bet for tacos in Enci now is The Taco Stand. Always a line out the door and down the block.
konos is dope. Healthy portions I think he said rubios because the original is on mission bay dray by the 5 south entrance.
I haven't lived in SD since 1990. I grew up surfing Crystal Pier, and I can't even remember what was on that corner except that it was run down and practically vacant. It sure has changed. Never heard of Kono's. Rubio's wasn't a chain back in the day...it took a few years before they branched off from the original Mission Bay Dr. restaurant. It was extremely popular...30 years ago. I used to eat at the Roberto's #1 in National City a lot on my way home from successful strikes to IB and BM's. Lived in the SDSU area.
Thanks for the backstory. I've only lived here for 5 years, so there is a whole lot that I am not aware of. Rubio's is so big now, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting one. We used to get catering from them at least once a month when we were in the office.
Delta gave us some in the backend. Chopped it up a bit into the wknd. Saturday they showed some faces and some peaks. Paddle out was brutal, caught a few on the ol Perfection boart and injured my thumb with the blood going under the nail that sidelined me for the rest of that day. It didn't do much justice for me. Sunday was cleaner overall but the first run i had it was much the same. I stuck it out tho and got in right away and had some nice rides on the 6'9 loehr boart. After drinking some beers and watching a couple games, my buddies n i went out for an evening sess and had some more decent rides. Went to a buddy's cookout down the street after, and with the fire and spread of food it made it all the wknd that much better. fyi, it's like 80 degrees around here and i was skinning it most of the wknd
Damn first crabs and now (real, west coast) burritos. @Manik picking crabs is more about the experience than the meat. A crab meal should take about 4 hours, it requires at least 6 light beers, and you actually fill up potato salad and corn on the cob, not crabs LOL. Source: I spent the first 18 years of my life on the between the east and west shores of the Chesapeake in MD. Finally got my first real surf in 2 weeks this morning. Paddled out before dawn into some waist high rollers. So here's something new for me: I drove to the beach on Saturday to mess around in the choppy wind swell for a bit. I parked the van, and when I turned to get out I felt something pop in my back and for the next 24 hours I was immobilized. I literally had to crawl into the back and lay there while my wife drove us home. Question for the old guys on here: am I now old?
Laurel, DE is where I grew up, but my parents were never about the crab picking. Didn't really get into it until adulthood in Baltimore. I feel like I'm pretty qualified to answer this question. I'm going to go with a solid "YES". (hope it heals up quickly and doesn't resurface)
