Surfer magazine

I still have a large collection rotting away in a box in my garage, stretching from the early 70's to the late 80's. Surfer, Surfing, and a few other lesser-known mags like Breakout, which was printed out of Carlsbad CA and had a run during 1980 to about '87 or '88.

It's funny to see the "discovery" of places like Tamarin Bay, Uluwatu, Cloudbreak, Lagundri Bay and even Mavericks. Funny, but sad.

Probably my most cherished issue is a 1972 issue of Surfer which was (and still is) a very special issue. It contains a 20 page comic book called "Tales From The Tube", chocked full of some of the greatest surf stories and artwork from some of the most talented and influential artists of our time...most notably Rick Griffin and R. Crumb.

Of course it's growing in value, but I can't bring myself to part with it at $150. $1500, maybe.

So cool. Did he do the art for Toy Machine skateboards back in the day? Either he did, or they completely ripped off his style.

 

I don't know, but I highly doubt it.

But I would LOVE to have a skateboard covered with R. Crumb art lol

I actually had to look up who Robert Williams is lol, but I immediately recognized his work.

I've been a fan of the underground comix scene of the 60's - 70's almost since inception

 

Love that they featured his work in this vid....
Another goofy mag from the 80's was called CARtoons, saw his work for the first time there. There is a great doc about him that came out a few years back. Also one about Crumb directed by David Lynch I think? I could talk underground comics all day, I used to love that stuff. Sold everything in college that I had for my cafeteria fee, poor boy had to eat.. big regret.

Have you guys seen the show on Adult Swim called "Superjail"? Apparently it was inspired by R. Crumb and you can def see the similarities to the video you posted.

If you have not seen it, and you like violent cartoons/comics, you should def check it out. I would post something but I'm on my work computer...

 

I'll have to check it out, Adult Swim is insane. I downloaded the channel on my Roku and had no idea how many shows there are. I've been trying to work through a few but spare time to binge isn't easy. There is one called Mr Pickles about a satanic dog that wants to bang it's owner, that was almost too twisted and disturbing.

 

LOL have not seen that one. I recommend Moral Orel, Metalocalypse, and of course Super Jail. All of these shows are meant to be viewed late-night after ample partakeage, if you catch my drift.

 

YES!!! Metalocalypse is awesome!! I watched most of those, lol. Yeah, I'll check out Super Jail, maybe after tonights partaking, lol!
Adult Swim at the beginning was just a few shows (I remember Aqua Teen Hunger Force and they did a lot of established shows like Family Guy) to probably one of the most creative things on TV, or internet. The list of shows from A to Z is huge, with some crazy ass titles.
I think it's great, 90 percent of these would have been considered underground and now there are so many I can't keep up.

 

As you have already seen and heard since this original post, the political endorsement was posted because they already knew they were going to shot down operations. Personally, I applaud them for it since they knew they had nothing to lose anymore. Beyond that, their quality has been going downhill for a long time. Combine that with the fact that print is going the way of the dodo bird. Also back when I turned 30 (91) it hit me they were not geared towards anyone over the age of 15 so at that point I switched to The Surfers Journal.

 

They are good combination, I think they will truly blend in
