Agreed. To make matters worse, the hood on my 5/4 has never quite fit right causing me to arch my neck even more, which no doubt contributed to the mess I'm in. I'm going to cut the bill off next time I go out.
As always, the SI medical staff never disappoint. Things have been improving, although I passed up a nice swell this last weekend, not wanting to undo the progress I have made. First swell I missed in eons. Seeing a good physio now, and no longer on the heavy meds. Getting old, as always, sucks.
Been surfing a lot in the last year and a half due to COVID and working from home, the most since I was in college, but now I'm in my 30's and paying for some of my stupider decisions earlier in life. Like dislocating my shoulder and having my friend "pop it back in". Woke up a few nights ago with extreme pain in my right shoulder, I couldn't go back to sleep and tossed and turned all night. It's been bothering me since like 2016 but I can usually shrug it off. Well, all the surf lately has really aggravated it. The wife got so annoyed at me keeping her up all night that she made me an appointment with a physical therapist. I kept saying I would do it but never did. Anywho, I go to my consult and they determine that I have 3 out of 4 muscles in my rotator cuff that are weak and mis-aligned, but nothing is torn. My range of motion is s*** and I have some minor nerve damage too. We do some exercises and they give me some stretches and stuff to do at home. I kid you not, one day after I start doing the stretches I'm not only able to sleep thru the night again but my arm feels stronger in the water. I'm sitting here typing this pain-free. So, moral of the story, physical therapy is awesome and totally worth it. If you have a nagging pain go get that s*** looked at!
I know many of you have been waiting in great anticipation for an update on my neck AIDS. Well it took 3 months of PT, and many expensive trips to an orthopedic doc, and then finally to a physiatrist (spine doc) who eventually injected a steroid into my cervical spine (yes, I have a cervix) that finally did the trick, at least for now. It was all wildly expensive, but did finally allow me to get back into the water a couple of weeks ago in time for the Ana swell. However, I was so out of shape I could best be described as being in an advanced state of apoxia. Also, I had to modify my paddle out to basically look straight down at my board with intermittent 'peeks' up to see if a wave/board/lobster buoy was barrelling towards me. I'm thinking about building a head rest on the nose of my board. So there it is, enjoy your youth!
Wow Sigmund, I didn't think your neck issues were going to be that bad. If I rotate my neck it sounds like a bowl of rice crispies, all snap crackle and pop. Hope I don't have neck AIDS.
Yea, neither did I, but shit wouldn't get better. For a while there I though, well, this is my new normal. But finally things improved, however, my right arm is still pretty weak from nerve damage.
In the last 2 years I have been injured and unable to surf for a total of 10 months. My latest injury I set myself on fire and ended up in Johns Hopkins. I started doing Drugs again so I've been on quite the binder. I got some fish scale and that really helps. I will never quit doing drugs again. The Fish Scale was better for pain than all the Opiates they gave me.
The burns hurt very bad. I have broken legs that hurt less. It was not the intensity like a broken leg but the pain dragged on for 10 days. Changing bandages then showering was horrible. I was getting piss drunk all day and doing Scale. Good thing that's my norm! Most people can't drink as much as me. So I'm lucky in that regard. I also got a Ball of Scale, and that purity can be hard to come by some times. 0 cut, all scale. But not on my burns. Right down the hatch Mary Poppins!
