I think you'd like KOL, the radio stuff is weak but they have some good music, good guitar rock

Gangster rap definitely started in the 80's, it was the only time I listened to it. (I was a teen in Chicago). NWA and The Geto Boys were both big in da hood around 1988. Ice T and Slick Rick even before that but were pretty tame in comparison. By 1990 I had moved on from the genre but it really just started blowing up huge, thanks to MTV.
This tune still is awesome, definitely pumps you up.

Not "gangster rap," per se... but still a kick ass record of the time...

I love the old narrative rap songs. So, I listened to the Snoop version of this maybe 1000 times before I even knew this existed. Respect to the early rappers.

Pauls Boutique is such an underrated album, still in the 80's when they were all about partying and girls, before their ultimate hipster save Tibet mode. Produced by the famous Dust Brothers

So I was out at crowded Pumphouse in small windchoppe - first waves of the pre-season and I sang the title of this little ditty out loud when one of my old skool buds asked me about the ganja whilst waiting for a set. It worked great!
