The Best Wetsuit Available for an NJ Surfer

Thanks for the Endorsement, don't get out as frequently as you but still wanna be comfy in the chilly environs. Just bought a 5/4/3 amp, can't wait to try it out. Been wearing the 4/3 mutant which is okay for a while but I got pretty chilled last weekend after 1.5 hours.

 

I currently have 2 oniel mutant 5/4 and i purchased the patagonia r4 suit.the r4 is the best winter suit hands down ! Way better than the oniel.100% warmer the problem with the r4 is getting out of it when its wet. Totaly recommend it!!!!!

 

How is the weight on the r4 compared to a suit without the wool lining in it ??? I been looking at other suits . Do get me wrong I am Loyal to Hyperflex but there are there are some suits that they dont make .

I also have been looking at Esentials wetsuits they have some nice stuff too

 

If I lived closer to the beach, I'd definitely get the Patagonia suit. I only get out on the odd weekend cuz I'm living about 1.5 hours from coast.so it's not worth dropping the big bucks at this point.

 

I haven't voted because I can't really just pick one that I like the best. Plus there are a bunch I haven't even tried.
I wasn't thrilled with the RipCurl suits, but maybe because I never had any of there higher end models.
Love the XCel Infinity 5/4 hooded (neck entry).
Love the O'Neill 3/2 mutant. Great quality and versatility. I can rock the hood when it's cold enough to need one, but too warm for the 5mil. Then switch to no hood when it warms up even more.
I also have no complaints on the Quiksilver Cell springsuit
Those 3 cover all my needs.

I have tired many differnt brand and model suits over the years. I just find that HyperFlex has meets my needs in all aspects. Good Quaility and workmanship, Good Customer service, Good Price and they perform well. I like they are very flexable yet still able to keep me warm during the long hour sessions.

I might take the Plung and buy a Patagonia or a Essential wetsuit . I have never tired either of these brands so I would like to test them out aswell.

Buying a wetsuit is just all about preference and how big you wallet is. You can buy a top of the line suit and replace it every year cause it falls apart by the end of the winter. You could spend a little less money and it keep you just as warm if not warmer longer and it last a couple years providing that you take care of it .

 

Props to Scobeyville for the $150 brand new 5/4 West Lotus. I usually wear medium but for some reason the large from West fit well. Large short would be perfect but I'm not complaining...

 

I bought a 4/3 Hyperflex Flow last year. Love it so far...I wear it from about last week in March/early April through end of June in Deleware and MD shore waters. I was perfectly warm in early April last year...got teased a little wearing a 4/3 in late June, but I wasn't too hot either, just comfy. Living 3-4 hrs from the beach, this 1 suit gets me 6+ months of surfing opportunities from the spring/early summer and from late Sept. through early December. I just need to take off 3 months in the winter.

 

Is ^ hooded? If so, get yourself some 7 mil boots and a good set of gloves and you would be comfy all year. I know you're a ways from the water (gets dark early) but you could be a weekend warrior... Earlier in this thread someone said they surf Monmouth County NJ all year in a hooded 4/3 with no problems...

Daylight savings is coming... countdown 5 more days till my after work sessions go from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours...

 

you'd have to be a pretty big guy with a lot of meat on you to surf w/ a 4/3 all year in mon cty.

great swell early last april i tried to ditch the 5mm and go w/ the 4/3 and sep. hood and it was quite a mistake. i stayed in for a while, but by the time i was out and undressed, i had the chills and they stuck with me all day. that was terrible. couldn't surf the second session

 

yeah, I was going by what ^ said. I personally wear a psycho 6/5/4 in the dead of winter which is a bit overkill but i can stay out for 3+ hours easy. Just picked up the West Lotus 5/4 which is nice and will be a good in between suit or a dry suit to put on for the second session...
