Now that it's Summer and it's pretty flat most of the time here, I'm thinking of embarking on a training program to raise my fitness levels for the Autumn / Winter. Any ideas or tips? Please share.

    Fitness tip

It really depends on your fitness level, but I'm assuming that if you're thinking about doing fitness training for surfing you're probably quite fit already.

One of the biggest improvements I've found I've been able to make to my fitness inrecent years has been doing sprint training. It's good for your legs, arms and very importantly for surfing, your recovery rates.

    So you do:
3x 15m sprints with 20 second breaks between
    1 minute break
3x 20m sprints with 30 second breaks between
    1 minute break
    3x 40m sprints with 1minute breaks between

You can add more sets or change the distances to suit you. When I say sprint I mean you gotta run the absolute fastest you possibly can all the way. The breaks are designed to give you time to recover fully before the next rep, so even though you might feel ready, don't skimp on the breaks - your body needs them so you can run as fast as possible in the next sprint.

I would do them going slightly uphill to make the biggest difference to your fitness.

The reason this is so good for surfing is that it increases your recovery rate (or reduces the amount of time it takes you to recover from a burst of exercise, like a burst of paddling or a big duck-dive.)

    Hope this helps!

One of the best aspects for surfing excersizes is to build stamina and core strength, when i work out especially when it comes to my shoulder muscles, the best way to get in shape for surfing is to do more reps with less weight, i shoulder press 70 pounds 3 sets of 20-25 reps, its not much weight but it increases my stamina and overall strength, so i can paddle much longer and recover from a long paddle out much quicker, also just a mess of ab workouts strengthen your core and increase your balance drastically.
