Ocean City Kills Recycling Program Does anyone else see something terribly wrong with this picture? They say it's too hard to keep the program running (bs) and the biggest savings would be from the cut of employee's salaries. Cut out recycling program, cut jobs, cut spending? Such bullsh!t! So now everything, plastic, trash, paper, corrugated cardboard, aluminum, it all gets clumped together, shipped to Chester, PA to be incinerated and converted into "energy" which is probably sold to PA and all the off-put and gases turn into air pollution. What a wonderful, polluting, family beach town.
While I agree is bs to cut a recycling program, the incinerators really are the way to go....quoting my current biotech prof... the dioxins released by 20 "backyard trash burning families" over the course of a year is equal to that released by a state of the art incinerator of 150,000 families. plus we're getting energy out of it, and soooooo much less trash is going to the landfill. i now feel bad about the tires i burned yesterday...

At the core of their premise was that we will be swamped in our own garbage if we don't recycle- to which they responded in capital letters "BullSHIRT." Only on HBO the real word was permitted. So true in so many ways... I love how the government can mandate all types of BS, Executive orders from the same clowns in a white house, regardless of party, regulations and taxes on taxes, etc...etc And local governments are no different,...liars, cheats, con-men, corruption, nepotism, kickbacks, whole generations of single families, both local and national that continue to Hide behind their so called rule of law and control the ebb and flow of money, jobs and peoples lives. That being said, they could make a national law or state law to mandate the collection and reprocessing of items which can be recycled, .....which is just about most everything outside of Baby diapers,... which I have read can be burned in some friendly none polluting/less polluting manner to get energy from. But the big corps would much rather produce kilo-tons of more future garbage. People, it is 2010 and not a damn thing has changed in the past 40 years,...not one thing. We have a government based on turn of century,... 1900 that is. All local, state, and federal governments and agencies need to be gutted. If you can not see that the system is broke, figuratively and literally, your a fool. Actually we are all fools, since no one has the sack to effect real change in an extinct system of governance both in our nation and world wide. Wake up people, our own government has and will kill as many of us as they needed to in order to maintain the system AS-IS. True true What the crap?! They just made my building buy bins for like 500 bucks to support this program, then they cut it only months later? Ridiculous. Aside from that, I have also heard that recycling doesn't really save the environment much waste. I haven't done the research to really know either way, but I think most of it really comes down to consumption. Things like single-use plastics and styrofoam are the real culprits in the pollution/garbage game. Cities like San Francisco, LA, and (hopefully they follow through) Baltimore have a big part of the answer in my opinion. Another pet peeve of mine...junk mail. How much of your mail do you put straight into the garbage? If you're like me, it's at least 80%, if not more. Not necessarily relevant, though. I'd really like to see OC do more to cut down on littering, especially on the beach. Anybody here in the Boy Scouts? That would be a great Eagle Scout project: enact a program to cut down on littering at the beach. There is A LOT aside from recycling that could really help the city. Freaking plastics though...that junk decays slower than radioactive waste, and very few people seem to really consider the consequences, which is tragic for all of us since most of it ends up in the ocean.
A great tragedy is amongst us. xgen70, as much as you and I have gotten into it, at least this is one topic we can both agree on and come to reasonable understanding. Imagine if this town turned all of their efforts into becoming the most 'green' town on the eastern seaboard... what an amazing thing that would become, and as well as make our citizens proud to show that our town is the most environmentally-friendly beach town of the mid-Atlantic! Now, I feel nothing but dishonor and dismay. If there is one thing that I like to do in the world and one thing that I am proud and work hard to achieve in this town, it WAS recycling. Now I feel as though the shoes were pulled off of my feet and I was told to go on my way. I hope this town burns in it's own filth On another note, I will be out front of City Hall on 3rd st Friday morning at Noon with protest signs in hand, and anyone is welcome to join me.
Space in landfills is a small reason to recycle... The real reason is that by recycling, you lessen the need for raw materials from the Earth, metal ore for aluminum, tin, steel. The processes of mining, refining, and shipping these materials are heavy polluters. And of course the oil for plastics and trees for paper.
The metals that you mention require no government program for recycling, as they generate revenue for people that perform the services of collecting and processing them. The amount of oil used in recycling plastic, as well as the carbon footprint, is far greater than the amount used in the process of making new plastic. It would make more sense to place a global effort on replacing the actual material of plastic with a non-petroleum-based compound. Otherwise, it's a larger creation of pollution, not to mention a waste of energy. Not very conservative. Likewise, trees are a renewable resource. If we have tree farms dedicated soley for paper that alone have increased the amount of trees by 200% in the last century, the argument for concern of our trees has no factual foundation. Moreso, the chemicals & petroleum used in the processing & transport of recycled paper damage the environment more than new production. If these are accepted as facts, the only reason left to fund a government program for the above items are purely emotional.
You need to use Sunchips- they have a really loud, but fully recyclable bag. Never mind how much environmentally suspect methods were used in development or transportation.
From what I've read the only material worth recycling is Aluminium. Most other items use more energy than they save and only exist because of government subsidies. For those that care, they should be much more concerned with not buying and using products with disposable plastic containers like water bottles in the 1st place. I believe you folks are just beginning to see cutbacks in government useless spending programs because "news flash!!!" we're broke, in debt, and insolvent!!!!!!!
Nearly all bags can be recycled. The question is to what economic and environmental cost? If the act of recycling creates more damage to the environment than disposal, why do it??? Exactly!!!
