Costa or PR is a good first trip and if you are short of cash you can still have a blast if you budget your cash flow

Bodyboarding or surfing? What is your experience level?

Costa Rica and Panama are very consistent and you can find many uncrowded breaks. I've been to Coast twice and I want to back. I never heard of a surf spot that is unbelievably consistent as Costa. Both times I was there the waves never dropped below 4 feet and tapped out at 10 feet.

Australia can be a scary place depending on where you like to go. Expect the some of the most crowded breaks in the world along the Gold Coast, they say that there are about a thousand surfers in the line up at Superbank which I believe stretches about 2 miles. I am hoping to visit Victoria within the next couple of months for business. I expect to surf Bells Beach.

Mexico is great place for bodyboarding with many sandy beach breaks, Puerto Escondido.

I would suggest getting a surf map book like 'Stormrider Guide' and weigh your options.

I agree... if you are willing to go to Australia then you may want to hit Indo and enjoy some of the best waves in the world.

keep it relatively cheap & close...go to costa rica. it's a great first surf trip (as someone has already said) & a great place to learn the ropes of surf travel w/out any serious consequences befalling you if you screw up.
but when the travel bug bites (& it will if you score), you can take the training wheels off & go someplace more exotic & off the beaten track. costa's got more than enough surf for a relatively inexperienced surfer to handle (i seem to recall a post asking advice about stepping up from a 7'3" funboard)...go anywhere else, & you'll be finding yourself in over your head, surf-wise.

I'd stick with costa or nicaragua, sick waves, just stay in the surf resorts' i know costa has plenty of sick spots, and i've seen some stuff on a surf resort in Nicaragua run by JJ Yema, really nice

I feel compelled to write because I just had the trip of a life time. I stayed at a place called "Joe's Place" in the still unspoiled north Pacific of Nicaragua. Man what an experience- Joe and his wife are super nice and any money going to them is directly helping out the local fishing village which she is the unofficial mayor of.
Anyways, to cut a long story short, i got the tubes of my life, caught a huge rooster fish and just had a great time with the local people. The hotel is simple but clean and safe, the food is inexpensive but frikken awesome. The location is stunning and all I can say is GO THERE!
