Looks great - just what we need - we may just as well put signs out on coastal highway with big arrows pointing to specific surf spots, saying "this spot breaking today at low-to-mid tide - report updated hourly!!!" That way, we'll get even more awesome crowds!

I'm sure a lot of level headed people that know how to surf would agree that people are going to surf regardless. These beaches are not a secret and they are super crowded all summer long. Surfing is not some underground sport, the report is for the locals that have to drive to get to the spots, waist gas and time. Who cares about the kooks, if you know how to surf it shouldn't be a big deal, and if you want uncrowded waves in the summer, move to a remote island in the micros. I think the site is cool, I like what they are doing. I think it will give me more surfing time. Don't be a hater, sounds like you are little too salty. Who calls it coastal Hwy anyways are u even from DE?

    What?

The only people who need reports are the non-locals. Locals know what works and what doesn't. The ones wasting gas are driving from far away. The locals have a small phone chain. Reporting on a break is not good and not fair. A general report is acceptable but spot dropping reports suck and are STUPID!

....been in Dewey every summer (and most weekends) for 10 years - and who are you to question my "qualifications"? What's your problem with "coastal highway"? I've been surfing the midatlantic since the 60's (as kids we used to rent boards out of a truck on, like 90th street in OC) ...and if by "hater", you're referring to the crowds, yes, I do hate the crowds! I don't even bother with IRI anymore unless I'm there at first light (one of the last times I surfed there on a good sized day, as I dropped into my first wave, a guy's head popped up right in front of my board - and I thought that I was going to (accidently) take his head off. I rode in, got out and drove down to the island. Lots of guys out, but lots of room. Rarely been back to the inlet. ...so are you just looking for a p*ssing contest, or what?

I think that some transplant locals and may be some locals need to grow and try to develop a surf community like in other states, I know the waves are not good here, but that doesn't mean you are not a surfer or there aren't real surfers with a passion for the sport in DE. This website and the new surf report site are key to a development in the surfing culture in this area, where one day we could have an artificial reef, instead of yearly dredging that ruins the waves. Of course only an individual with an open mind could understand any of this. Yeah don't want to mention the secret Indian River Inlet, or the super low key Tower rd break.

I suspect the last thing any local needs is a growing community of transplants, in fact its one of my worst fears.

And there are no "transplant locals" there are locals, and then there is everyone else.

I know it sucks but it's the way of the world. Specific spots are reported on up and down the California coast. Same with Hawaii. Even on this site street names are given.

And who the hell calls Rt One 'Coastal Highway'?

    Pretty soon...

...they will call it "IR Express Way!" That's how they got AC to become so beautiful! I can't wait to go to the casino at North Side and I can check out Surf Ninga's stupid report so I can play craps; and win a new BIC surfboard; and surf when I'm done; and throw nickels to bum's; and step over syringes in the sand!

"Slowly following the way of the Buffalo!"

When I lived in NJ I started a surf report. This was wayyyyy back in the early 90's at the start of internet use. I had a 976 # to go along with the report and made $1 for every call, (New York area 900 pay line) I thought I was the smartest guy around and based my report from Sandy Hook to LBI. I would get up everyday and drive that route and give specific reports from some well known spots. I never thought anyone would care and actually thought I would be a hero for being on the cusp of the information age :D. Well it didn't really go that way, everyone hated me (or my internet alter ego) . What sounded good on paper made no sense in the real world and angered everyone who was local to the areas I reported on including my own area. I had the grand idea that I would be spreading out the crowds by giving them more options . I did that report for 4 years before it became popular enough that I was known and at least in my mind "hunted" :(. Really sucked for me and I eventually ended it so that I could rest easy. After the last report I took a deep breath and had the first good nights sleep in a long time, Today I totally understand the anger that was directed at me. You should be commended for being ambitious but take my story as a cautionary tale :).

I don't care what you guys say im a true local born and raised sussex county blood, and I think its a good idea, gas sucks, and i don't have much money, so knowing when to go up there or when to head somewhere else instead will help me alot, and it dosn't matter about the crowds its so freaking packed there anytime there is a waist high crumbler it won't change a thing.

You know it's funny you say that. When I was younger and even today I never read surf magazines, dressed like a surfer, talked like a surfer. When I started the report I thought I was the first to ever think of such a thing :D. About a year into my business I was dropping off business cards at a local shop that I had a cross promotional deal with, one of the kids that worked there said "hey thats just like surfline". I was like WHAT!! someone stole my idea??? Then I looked up surfline through the internet and realized that not only were they bigger but clearly more professional. My reports were way more accurate for my small area but still surfline was more pollished compared to my approach. After a few years of the daily grind of making the twice daily journey and barely breaking even I hired people to call in reports to a central location and I would compile reports from them. My Job was to write the daily internet report and record 2 messages a day. I always thought that if I had just opened a surfer or surfing magazine I could have saved myself a ton of money, time and bad feeling and let surfline take the bashing. After all they were doing it first even though I had the pleasure for a while of thinking it was my brainchild, ignorance is bliss I guess.

The lesson I learned about giving site specific reports was that the people who live, pay taxes (or their parents pay taxes) and generally care about an area should be given some space to enjoy where they live without every tom, **** and harry knowing without fail exactly what is going on at their spot on every day. It takes the fun out of surfing as far as I am concerned, since to me finding a spot, that is not supposed to be working on a specific swell working well with knowone out is the best feeling there is.

Who cares about another report! You guys sit here and listen to the forecast, why does it matter about some else taking their spare time to do something other than sit on this forum all day. The best forecast is hoping in your truck and going down to the beach!! If you go by the forecast you will never surf!! You all blame Micah when the forecast isn't good and the waves are crap because you didn't take the time to get up off your ass and go check it, just go down and surf! And when you get their and there are 20 guys out, paddle your ass out, surf and stop complaining about it. Someone should publish an article about how east coast surfs complain more than a pregnant woman! Man you guys could never surf in Cali or Hawaii where every good break has a minimum of 20 people.
