I'm assuming other people have this problem frequently too. I enjoy fishing when I'm not surfing too, but I always have respect for people in the water. It's amazing that some people who fish will cast right around you. I've actually had fishing line wrapped around me before. I'm just waiting for it to wrap around my neck. They have the whole beach and they always tend to cast right where I'm surfing. Does anyone else have this problem and how do you deal with it? Talking with them doesn't seem to work.
swim next to the rocks with about 4 or 5 people. hopefully you got some bodyboarder in the group since we have flippers to push more. and try to grab one of there lines. every man grabs the line and pulls the man into the water. just kidding..... i normally just try to stay away from them. never really had problems with them. whats very annoying is when it is just you out in the ocean and some guy comes up with his chair, and 12ft shore rod and decides to cast out right where you are. most cases i just cross his line a few times and shoot dirty looks till he leaves
I kno wut u mean, it sucks. the only way they'll move is if you kill em w/ kindness when u ask em. or just roll deep. No one owns the ocean tho, u cant ask a shark to move down the beach, just hope for the best or hope for barrels & be glad you're riding waves ...and then pray they legalize herbs for all adults in CA in november
I do alot of fishing but never near bathers or surfers. Anybody who does cast near you is a buttplug looking for a fight. I have no tolerance for some ahole feeling the need to fish where I'm surfing. That being said I won't walk in where somebodys already fishing.
according to OCMD beach patrol it is illegal to fish within 100' of anyone in the water on one occasion after a fisherman had repeatedly cast near me and then on a ride I hit his line I did flip my board over grab his line and cut it on my fin - he packed up and left, but maybe because there was only one of him and three of us. I have on one occasion seen a beach patrol on an atv actually make a fisherman move due to his proximity to surfers but that is very rare and since they usually only patrol for a short time after the lifeguards leave they wont be around to see it often
Keep in mind that the same bottom features that make good breaks make good fishing spots... sand bars. So it's a resource we need to recognize has value to both of us, and nobody has a greater right to it than the other. So there has to be some etiquette.... on both sides. Do you walk up to somebody and stand shoulder to shoulder with him, and cast out right next to where he's fishing? No... not if you can help it. Do you paddle right out where a guy's been surfing and sit rail to rail waiting for the next set? Not if you can help it. Same goes for fishing and surfing. Have some courtesy for the guy who's there first. If somebody's fishing... avoid him if you can. If you're surfing, the fishermen should do the same thing.
yeah, i dont' understand y anyone would want to cast by a bunch of ppl in the water. I see it all the time in the summer. Usually, and almost always, it's some asshole who doesn't want to actually carry his or her board to the water, so they figure they'll use the beach as they're own personal parking lot and throw out a rod so they can "legally" be there. Without fail, some douche bag with a rip curl or oneill or quicksilver sticker on his bumper will park right next to the damn break and cast out. And he's usually fat and tan. And rides for 30 minute sessions and gets out and eats more, because he's fat and wants to stay that way. This irritates me if you can't tell.
i do surf fishing as well but i always go to a place not breaking and cast there. that way i wont have to move if anyone paddles out.
Yeah, I agree. I won't surf where someone has cast their line and I expect people to not cast there line when a surfer is there first. It's basically just common sense to respect other people. That's why it irritates me. Giving the person a dirty look works sometimes. Othertimes, you have to talk to them especially if it could cause yourself to drown or get injured.
I think you have to kind of not really know what your doing (either casting or surfing) or outright looking to mess with someone - for there to be a real issue. For one thing, the best fishing conditions here are high tide, with a light NE breeze. Any sort of swell over 5 ft where you may end up getting flushed to the beach or close to the rocks, there aren't likely to be surfcasters or if there are, they're ones who know what they're doing. I do both and have never had any problem except for a few times over the years when people are casting off the jetty - or more rarely, the beach - and they think I'm not situationally aware because I'm sitting close to where they're casting. One old guy started yelling at me like I was his unruly grandkid or something and I was tempted to flip him the bird but I just nod and point to their line.
I remember taking fingernail clippers with me in the water and if a fisherman casts at me, I snipped his line. good times.....good times
I only run into that when I surf The Cove . I just ride right over there line if they start casting out when I was there first. A 11 inch pivot fin will cut just about any line
yyyyyyyyyyyooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo i will move to a mobile home in south lake tahoe and skip college
got in a fist fight with a shoobee using massive weights and a freshwater rod. he almost took the nose off my stick so I went to the beach and when he said he was from PA I Mollywhopped him into next week
I was surfing next to Avalon Pier in Nags Head prolly back in 05 when some dirty looking fisherman and his son were repeatedly casting their double treble hook got-cha's at me. I know they were got-chas bc they landed probably 2 feet from me; the splash from the lure smacking the water actually landed on me. I was yelling WTF at them until after the 5th cast or so when I started paddling towards shore totally enraged and ready to fight. I didnt even make it to shore before the guy had grabbed his kid and all his stuff and ran off the pier and away into the parking lot. Let me tell ya, this guy was a great role model for his kid. Potentially injuring a random stranger then fleeing when it comes time to face the music is exactly how I want my children remembering me after Im dead! (sarcasm)
I keep waiting for the namby pamby hand wringers to come on here and tell everyone that violence is never the answer and if a fisherman casts at you, it's your obligation to paddle to another spot.
Anyone ever get hooked by a fisherman? I've heard a few stories, but never witnessed it first-hand. That's got to really s-ck.
i have sharp teeth, and when i've ridden waves into lines i've actually grabbed them with both hands and bitten them off or more often just lifted it over my head, but i always just keep going.sometimes they will be flipping out yelling at me and then i pretend i don't hear them.very often they'll cast out where we're sitting and you'll see the splash and hear 'plunk' right where you're sitting.since i live here and they only occasionally show up off-season it's funny, since they're stuck on the beach and forced to look out while we're free in the water, but in the summer it can be more dangerous because you just never know if someone will cast a big hook your way.you can guess they really like me.
I surf near jetties (as many of us do) all the time. If the fishermen are casting anywhere in my general area, I paddle over to them and ask them to keep it away from me. If they say no or continue casting near me, I tell them I will wrap the 20lb test around their wrist and ankles and knock them into the water. On the rare occasion I've had to say, it has worked. Most of them cast off the end of the jetty towards the horizon though and aren't idiots/douche bags.
