I would think the water is cold that far south . I would say maybe in the low 50's you might be ok with a 3/2 and booties

in the second endless summer they say they built a ton of houses out there which blocks the wind and stops the sand from the dunes from filling in the bottom of the ocean cause the wave to not break as good as it did .but its got be better then any thing we got in va beach i mean i know first street is fing legendary

Its winter down there so definately bring a wetsuit and booties. Have your boardies for the beach and Durban. I would suggest looking up some of the South African surf shops and web sites that tell you about the climate, crowds, water dangers and so forth. I did that preparing for Costa Rica, Scotland and hopefully in the near future, Alaska. I've found the surfers in Alaska and Scotland to be very friendly and love talking to visitors considering such adventures. Know all their is to know so you're ready for anything. Remember there are coves and breaks from Durban all the way to the Cape so be ready to score. Look at google Earth. St Francis is still a great wave by all accounts I've seen. Wannasurf .com used to be a great site for this. Not sure if they're still up. Have a great trip. Be sure to visit the wildlife preserves.

I surfed J-Bay last July and I wore a 3:2 with no boots or gloves and I was fine. I think I remember the air temperature and the water temperature both being in the low 60s.
