Used Surfboard

6'4" Canyon Fish Twin Fin Super Thick and wide good board to get into surfing. Easier to store and transport to and from the beach versus the lonboard. He wants 240 but im sure would take a little less.

Check out the second board on that thread. If your friend is remotely talented in surfing he will get bored with a fun-shape or longboard very quickly. I learned on a board very similar to that and it was perfect for me.

Na hes never surfed in his life and were trying to get something easy to learn on like a fun shape or a roundfish but thanks fore the heads up

 

It is but I feel like its valid. If you start out riding a fun-shape or a longboard and are interested in that type of riding style then typically id imagine they will want to upgrade to a more specific type of board very quickly (ie, straight nose rider, performance longboard, whatever) You don't see too many people progressing and getting good at surfing and sticking with a fun-shape. I sold the Walden mini-magic I had because it felt like funshape, Its too small to nose-ride and too long to turn it like a shortboard.

This is not some longboard bashing post, I own longboards, Alaias, standup boogies, fishes, and shortboards. Just voicing an opinion.

If the newb eventually wants to surf a shortboard, then I agree he'll get tired of the longboard. The fun shape, in my opinon, is not good for anyone who plans on sticking with it because almost everyone gets tired of them.

i think if you rode a good egg you'd see that they work better than short or long boards on those frequent new jersey in between days when you may get bored sitting around bogging down on a shortboard but a longboard is not necessarily as good,especially if you're a shortboarder like me.very often on those 1.5 foot days the shortboarders are sitting around watching me surf,and the way mine are shaped the fun = FUN-ctional.i am a shortboarder,but my Bing Good Karma has me surfing days I wouldn't even paddle out on a shortboard,yet being a shortboarder all the way I don't need a longboard and I'm still surfing while my shortboard friends are watching.
egg,disc,mid-length,functional.the hybrid/funshape bad rap is a misnomer;some shapers make them functional,not like the many popout-type funshapes.

and before you say it,yes,the fish also applies,but many days are even too small for a fish,and that's when you should ride an egg.

I'm 6'5", weigh up to 250 full winter gear,and my brand new 7'2" In The Eye egg is an incredibly hot stick,so much so that I'm selling my well-used but watertight and very solid

I've ridden my 5'10"x21"x3" fish in knee-high conditions. Below that, what's the point?

 

i know and agree,but only to a point,because some knee high waves are boring for a fish,and sometimes the egg is, as you point out, a bore.
if it's a really really weak knee high but long wave i want my egg.
if it's not quite as weak knee high shorter wave i'd say fish.
but, fish can sometimes bog,too.
it is annoying sometimes deciding which boards to ride,but i switch a lot because i surf a lot,so it doesn't get boring that way.

 

I didnt say you were bashing Longboarders. I just think that its the other way around. I feel that riding a shortboard tend to get repetive after awhile. Most off the rack shortboards are not make for our average quality of waves.

I have all kinds of boards short, long, retro and even some nice vintage ones. I personally like longboarding and that what I do 80% I always have a shortboard with me in the truck if the mood hits me to ride it. I feel that longboarding makes a person a better all around surfer cause there is a alot more skill in it that an short or funboard.

For a beginner,Im going to say a funboard or longboard.You just don't want the dude to get frustrated either.Let him learn the basics and take it from there.I was just talking to a guy the other day about this.He bought his son a $500 dollar short board.The kid used it and struggled and then quit.If you want to learn how to ski, you don't pick out skis that are the fastest on the mountain.

 

Well that guy is stupid for buying his kid a new surfboard to start out. A first surfboard should be either lent, given, or very cheap. Not a brand new board.

 

first board was 50 dollars at a garage sale... I still have it... has like 10 dings, duck tape everywhere and is about as yellow as a banana, but i love the thing to death

 

What's his size, age, and fitness level?

I think for the average size guy who's in decent shape and relatively young, the best thing to learn on is a "hybrid" type board... like a big guy thruster that's just scaled up. Unless your a little kid in knee high mush, a longboard is not ideal to learn on. Funshapes are better, but if he ultimately wants to ride a shortboard, he'll get more mileage out of a hybrid.... a good two years before he's ready for a better board. He'll likely get tired of a funshape quickly.

And I'm not bashing funshapes. I've seen guys rip on them, and they can catch crappy waves pretty easily. You just can't noseride them.
