yeah man, same happens to me. I started to just use visene eye drops but then i found out that sh*t is bad for the eyes.

I bought some eyedrops called "Blink" they help so much.

As for your question, nothing you can use while in the water :(

Does Blink help them heal? Because long term exposure can cause real eye problems.

sunglasses are definately a must. figuring out how to not lose them is the trick. ive had all types of setups and im only just realizing that you need to make sure they are attached really well.

i have really bad eye problems from sun exposure. constant redness is a problem for me and i know that if i dont fix it now that i will be screwed whn im older. im only 22

I would guess its the salt water, and not the sun... At least for me it is...

Well, I have a serious redness issue in my eyes as well. Visine just doesn't clear up redness very well. It leaves my eyes even more dry feeling after I use it... I use clear eyes on my eyes and it generally does the best to remove redness...

But the issue I have with eye drops is this: I have to either be at a beach with a public shower so I can rinse my head and face off after a session. because if you put eye drops in your eyes after you have been surfing, the eye drops pick up all the salt on your eye lids and face and mixes in with the eye drops right on your eye balls... Everytime I try this, my eyes burn forever... So without a rinse or a shower, the eye drops do me no good...

Maybe I will look into that other eye drop you mentioned...

As far as goggle or sunglasses in the water.... call me old fashion, but that sounds a bit crazy to me. I have not travelled everywhere in the world, but to this day, I have never seen anyone, anywhere wearing goggles or sunglasses while they are surfing....

I understand that logically, one would want to keep their eyes protected in places like central america and islands in the india ocean, but honestly, I have never seen anyone, even in a remote place in Indo, ever wear "eye protection" while surfing...

Sure, everyone does as soon as they get out of the water...

Its just a part of surfing and being outdoors... and when you are not in the continental US, then the sunshine can get super strong.... But you just gotta use your hand as a sun visor as you look out to sea waiting for sets.... You gotta squint and time it.... But if you are just bobbing up and down in the lineup, staring directly at the sun, then of course you will go blind.....

I dunno, my vote is no on the sunglass goggle setup...

Visine and other drops are bad for your eyes because they constrict the blood vessels. This is what relieves the redness. And i agree with what your saying about not wearing sunglasses surfing, it just doesnt seem right, but at the same time i don't want to get any serious eye problems when im older.

The East Coast dawn patrols can kill your eyes, with the sun shooting it's rays straight into your eyes, and then some more reflecting off the water, forcing you to make a "T" shade with your hands...

But, I find my eyes are most sore from salt. Because when I surf long sessions (usually when it's rainy/cloudy cuz that's when the surf is usually up), I'll sometimes get what I like to call "salt stoned" : Every bright light I see has a hazy rainbow around it. This goes away after an hour or so.

However, I am aware of the beating that a surf-lifestyle puts on your eyes, and try to wear good sunglasses (that actually filter out harmful rays) while driving, on the boat, or anywhere else where I'm out in the open. I've read that cheap sunglasses are actually worse than none at all - they trick your eyes into letting in more light, but since they don't block harmful rays, your eyes open up to them too. So don't skimp on those shades.

i dont have much of an issue in the winter when the suns not too strong. even after a 4 hour session. IMHO its gotta be the sun that hurts my eyes in the summer

It must be me that my eyes are more sensitive to salt than sun. I've never gotten red eyes from just the sun. Or maybe i've had and told myself that it was the salt...

I used them for years but I left them in a BK after a sess never to see them again. I see more and more people wearing eye protection on the water. They are great and I will definitely get another pair. I get out of control headaches from bright sunlight so I don't have much choice. I don't care if people wear em in the line up or not. You only got one pair of eyes and the cool factor don't mean sh## ! Sunlight damages eyes - end of debate. The reflective rays off the water make it even worse (or so I've been told). They also give you some minor protection against impact. I used Rain-X on the inside and outside which really works great. Also, if you wear prescription glasses you can get that built in. I'm sure it would be nice to see everything in focus for our near sighted friends. They float but on big days you can tether them to your wetsuit or arm.

this forums weak. Just stay hydrated, that'll help the eyes from getting all bloodshot. Cause thats what bloodshot eyes are; just dried out eyes; which is why they feel scratchy. Wearing a hat or sunglasses when your outta the water will help too. Close your eyes when your underwater. hahah I feel like im talking to a little kid.
