The other day when I was surfing I collided with my buddy and I ended up getting a huge two inch wide one inch deep fin slash from my friends board. Is there anyway to fix it or what should I fill it with like in the crevice. My pops said that he can put like spackle in it and it should do the trick but I dont think thats a good idea. So like what is the best filler for that type of ding? Cause then I can just glass it over and fix it up
stay away from the spackle You may want to have a deep gash like that fixed professionally but it may cost you some coin and time away from your board. If you DIY check what kind of board you have (poly or epoxy). If you have an epoxy, do not use polyester resin to fix that hole. It will melt the foam. You need the proper type of resin and resin filler powder to fill a deep hole. Mix the filler with laminating resin and catalyst and it turns the resin into a thick paste that will fill the hole but not add too much weight, such as if you just poured resin into the hole. After the hole is filled and the resin cures, go ahead and put a layer of cloth saturated with catalyzed lam resin on it. After it cures again, finish up by brushing a coat of catalyzed sanding resin on it. Let that cure then sand smooth. If you're using a resin in a ding repair kit don't worry about the dfferent resins (laminating vs. sanding) use what they give you. Just make sure to sand it roughly between coats.
if you dont have alot of experience doing board repair I would just uses suncure it already mixed and has fiber in it already. I have heard of some using spakle to fill in the voild then reglass over it . Make sure whatever you do make sure the ding is water free before you do any of the prep and your board is clean of dust and debri after your prep work so your repair holds
I had about the same size gash in my, my dad and I just used resin and put a layer of fiberglass cloth down inside the gash and put resin over it, then we took an old drum head and put it on top of the gash to have a smooth finish, then we just sanded it when it was done. Turned out great the only problem is that it is brown and not white, but it is just as strong as it was before.
stay away from the spackle II I've seen ding repairs with spackle and man, it ain't pretty. You may find your board on the road to beaterville in a hurry. Not to say it can't work as a filler in a pinch. Suncure is good stuff but I find it works best on small dings. Beats messing with too many toxic chemicals, though. For a 2" x 1" hole you will probably need the bigger size tube.
I have uses Suncure on some pretty big repairs from deep gashes & rail dings , to busted fins. Its all in the prepwork and the sanding and finishing
