there was a 5-6 foot shark, a thresher i think, patrolling the lineup in ortley this morning circa 10am. the lifeguards kicked everyone out of the water...

they also been catching great whites, s as in plural, off the seaside pier all week.

i started reading this one year as my beach book. i had to put it away, as i was getting too freaked out. very interesting, tho. i keep meaning to revisit it...perhaps on a winter weekend getaway snowbaord trip to vermont. someplace far, far away from the ocean!

that said, jaws was just on.

    Great thread!

Nice thread ( except for sh@tbird's remark ;) Thanks to the OP for starting it. If this was Fl instead of NJ - Mid Atlantic, someone unfortunately probably would of ended up in the ER getting some stitches....

I think if they were catching great whites they would be in a bit of trouble, i believe they're on the endangered list. a fisherman caught a 7' "stray" pup about four years ago near indian river inlet and was levied fines and possible jail time.

the way he worded it gave me a mental image of a guy standing on the pier reeling in a 10 ft. great white... lol.

The only GW's I've been seen caught this year were way out by the Canyon. You're not reeling one of them in off a f*ckin pier. LOL

I once saw a Sunfish in the surf around Belmar area, this is not a pic of that one, but it looked just like this:

I also saw a Thresher in Deal last year around this time. Right between the two jetties at a well known spot. I know it was a Thresher b/c I've caught one before. It was cool as ****. Maybe because I longboard most of the time (as I was that day) and have the option of laying on my board out of the water, it wasn't that big of a scary thing for me.

All the sharks are up in jersey because the rapid dolphins have been chasing them away from delmarva. Nobody f*cks with a rabid dolphin, those great whites would rather put up with Snookie wading in the flats.

I was talking to a buddy of mine, he went out on a charter boat out to the Canyons and on there way back in they saw a 15 foot GW up near the surface about a mile out off of Indian River, they're definitely out there, but I don't think they come in too much closer than that...I was out on Memorial Day weekend a couple years ago and saw about a 6 foot shark, not even sure what kind it was, definitely not a thresher though, it may have been a bull...it was literally like 5 feet away from me just chillin' in the water, kinda freaked me out a little, but I stayed calm and just paddled away from it....not my only experience, more recently, I was surfing Playa Grande in CR and a dorsal fin popped up about 2 foot in front of my board, I'm positive that one was a bull 'cause another guy was right next to me and he recognized it immediately...but what the hell can you do...I just sat there and stood my ground (or water...lol) ...at that point if the damn thing is gonna rip your leg off then that's what's going to happen, not much you can do...just start swingin' and aim for the eyes! I have a lot of respect for them, though...it kills me to see what the ****in' asians are doing to 'em!

A friend of mine was surfing Sea Girt and said a shark swam right toward him dove down, went under him and then came up on the other side. He paddled right in and was definitly freaked out but this shows if the shark wanted it could've taken a taste but didn't.

I think there's just a bunch of food in the water and the abnormally warm water may have something to do with it.

hey guys. I was just out surfing in silverbeach nj.. I saw a nice little blue fish about a foot or so hauling ass. then behind it was a blacktip shark about 6 or 7 feet in length... and there were many shark spottings in and around the area so be careful guys. (and gals).

    surf on,

    Midway Beach

Hey guys... me and my buddy were just out in Midway Beach, we saw a few sharks about twenty yards further out than us. Two with short, blunt white fins swimming REAL slow (tigers possibly?) and one with black tip pointed fin (thresher). We booked it out of the water turned around and the sharks were circling where we were surfing. Beach patrol got right on top of things when we told them about it.

"I have a lot of respect for them, though...it kills me to see what the ****in' asians are doing to 'em! "

You have a lot of respect for them? lol. It's a stupid fish. It's amazing how left wing propaganda on the discovery channel has helped create "respect" in the general culture for these flesh eating machines that have no compassion, emotion, thought process, or intelligence.(their intelligent for a fish, that's about it) I say the more we catch out of the ocean the better. Enough of this lovey dovey bull****. Remember that lunatic living with the grizzlies? They ate him....big shocker! I say shoot the bears on site. Humans are at the top of the food chain. Not a bear. Not a tiger. A human. Someone's daughter/son/father ect is more important than a stupid fish. Plain and simple. I guess some people like being a little ***** down the food chain. I don't. I have common sense and my basic survival instincts are still intact. Oh this comes from someone who is a vegetarian and who can't stand people who hunt deer for fun. I hate sharks, but love dolphins. I find it so strange how we respect killer animals, but we slaughter peaceful sweet natured docile animals like cows. I think it says something about how we respect violence and killing. But I digress. I'm sure you have had enough of my rant. Simple solution: We should net the major beaches in Florida; the shark attack capitol of the world. Plain and simple. They do it in Australia and it works. Just my 2 cents.

I seen him do it! In all seriousness though I was out with the shupat08 and they were about 6ft and creepy. Right after we exited the water they started circling where we were sitting. So watch out for those bad-nasties. Shaka and good luck.
