Okay, first of all, I'm an "old guy"- I've been riding for more that 35 years. But I have to say, that in all of those years I have never ridden a BIC, yet I read about guys dissin' BICS a lot! Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with them? I mean, I know that they are longboards (or am I wrong - they are longboards, aren't they?), and there are always some guys who just don't like don't like ANY longboards! But I have to admit, I really don't pay attention to whatever "manufacturer/shaper/builder", etc. of board a guy may be carrying to the beach - I just judge their abilities based on what I see them do in the water and surf accordingly (e.g. surfing around kooks) when I'm in the water I usually can't see the logo. So anyway, what's up with the BICS?
If you want a good Bic ... goto wawa and buy a bic lighter ... its the only thing besides pens that Bic makes well
yea he said it. from what Ive experienced theyre basically plastic surfboards meant for beginners or for a shop that wants to have durable boards to rent. never ridden one and I don't want to either haha.
.....a "plastic" surfboard - you mean, kinda like "epoxy"? Wow, it is truly astounding that you guys can be so informative! I am truly amazed! (I think an average "kook" could give me more information than that!)
I had a surf lesson business and I used BIC's instead of softtops, for the durability. After 3 seasons of lessons, I still sold those things for almost $200. Most softtops fall apart in a couple seasons. Tried riding them once in waist/ chest junk. They were like riding logs, so unresponsive. My 9' longboard is way easier to use than the 7'9" Bic's i had. Can't beat the durability though.
this is a pretty cool coincidence... but i actually bought one of your boards a few years ago... saw an ad u posted on craigslist, and you actually really hooked me up... I got the 7'9" Bic, a leash, and a rash guard all for $150 from you. that was the first board i ever bought and i still use it! but it's because of that board that i surf today... it still has Exit 98 Surf painted on the deck!
Yeah, what he said. They pretty much ride like logs, but great for beginners and rentals. I picked one up that was a rental, from what the guy told me, for 12 years. Has a couple of dents (yes, dents, not dings) but still water tight and rideable. Got it for $50 bucks for friends when they come down. I keep threatening I'm gonna take the thing out one day when it's a zoo so I don't have to sweat getting hit, but haven't done it yet. Rode it once after I bought it and it has been sitting in my garage since. Friends coming down tomorrow from pa. That's what he'll be riding. No worries he's gonna f' it up.
bics are fun as anything, my parents bought us one like 4 years ago and thats what i use as my longboard, i even broke a fin off it and it still rides like new, and you could drop those things from a 3 story building and it would still be in one peice (except the fins of course)
Haha, nice. I'm glad it went to good use. I wish I kept one of those boards for friends who occasionally want to try it. You reaped the spoils of me having kids, and shutting the biz. You can probably still get tons more use from it... hell, let me know if/ when you want to get rid of it.
Yeah Bics are a Plastic Molded Surfboard. the come in shortboard and longboard sizes. I actullay tried one with one of those turbo tunnel fins in it . The really turn like crap and are really like said meant for the beginer or as a renatal .
When most people think of Bics they think of the white plastic beginner boards that really don't do anything well except hold up under any conditions. So if you gonna drag your board to the beach and leave it in your yard all winter then thats the board for you. Those boards are the "ACS Technology". Bic makes a better board called "E-Comp" which actually has a much better ride and feel. You can't compare the two. The ACS feels like a piece dead wood. The ACS is more like a NSP type feel - a lot more responsive and boyant than the ACS. Bottom line - I don't care for either but if I had to pick one it would be the E-Comp no question. I've ridden the 9'4" and the 10' - the 10' was not all that bad.
Bics get a bad rap from the start because they're "popouts" of the highest order, and there's already an anti-popout sentiment among the generally knowledgeable surfing population. So all performance claims aside, Bic does not have a fighting chance among people who are at all serious about surfing. Regarding performance... everything you've heard here is true. Bics ride like crap because the subtleties of what makes a great board, or even a good board, are just not there. They also ride like crap because of the materials they're made of, and anyone who's ridden enough "real" boards can tell that dead feeling immediately. They are, however, virtually indestructible! Many years ago I was in California, and there turned out to be a fun little swell at Malibu. I had never surfed there, and just HAD to get in the water. So I found a Bic for rent and went out. I might as well have had a sign on my back saying "I'm a kook... please drop in on me," cause I didn't have a wave to myself all day! I'm pretty sure the Bic had something to do with that.
