I dont know when your coming but this sunday we should have some waist high windswell to ride. But it all depends on where your staying. 1st street jetty you can surf form the lifeguard stand at around 3rd street over to the Jetty. Best peakin town typically but get crowweded its right on the boardwalk. You can go over the bridge at rudy inlet to coratan but its limited room to surf there. Best bet is to head down to the north end of the beach, basically 55th to 80th street you can surf no issues. CHeck out 62nd st, they have a large steel pier like apparatus down there from dredging and sometimes you can get a little right off the pilings thats really fun. Dont bring a body board! We typically have something to play on in teh evenings at first tst not much but occasianally a fun little wave comes thru, withthe NE windswell predicted to hit late weekend you might see swell, just check surfline.

 

If the lifeguard stands fly red flags (typically during good wavews) the whole beach is open to surfers like last weekend. should get a similar swell this weekend. best bets are stated above.



also: boogy boarding is not against any rules per say, just really annoying to surfers because they usually get in the way.

 

My best suggestion is bring a good small wave board, i dont know what you ride, but bring your summer time stick. DOnt count of the red flags for swimmers, undertow was up last weekend due to colin. From 3rd St to 48th Street VB is all about the tourist (like your friends) THey want nothing to do with surfers. Go to 62nd anywhere along there will work out for you. If you rfreinds are wanting to hang out at the boardwalk area of the beach then you have a long walk.
Best comprimise between boardwalk baecah for tourist and surfable break will be like 3rd street one side of lifeguard stand is swimmers and spongers, the other side is surfers and spngers

I'm not trying to be a ****. The body boarding scene around here has picked up since I started a few years ago, was just talking about it with a friend this weekend.

The kids were out there RIPPING this weekend on the north end. I saw an endless string of surfers sitting on the outside, not catching a single wave the whole day. While I was sitting inside shredding along with all the other body boarders.

One thing I noticed, in general, is that body boarders are much better wave riders. Now don't me wrong, I'm saying the average body boarder is better than the average surfer. Especially in the summertime.

And to say that body boarders get in the way is flat out ridiculous. I can paddle faster or just as fast as you I'm sure. Not only that, but in my experience, surfers bail on more waves than they take. So I couldn't even tell you how many times I had to watch perfect sections go by unridden because a surfer paddled in, and then was scared to make the steep drop on the peak. How about leave the steep ones to us.

Okay buddy. If you need to stroke your ego a bit, that's cool, but I would suggest just not paddling out with all the kooks. Just saying. There are some good spongers out there, but what "steep" waves are you talking about? Please let me know, because I'd love to see a wave around here that isn't a total mushburger.

To da other guy, skip this scene and go surf OCMD or Hatty. If your friends insist on staying in VA Beach, you'd probably have a lot more fun chasing the Russkie's, as the guy above advised...or maybe you'll get waves, who freaking knows. No matter what though, stop by Austins. That guy's shop is amazing, just check it out. I'm not affiliated in any way, just a fan.

 

We get plenty of steep waves, but I'm not acting like this is Indonesia. I apologize, my emotions got the best of me. I just sense surfers hate in VA, I can see you seething when I'm in the lineup and I find it disheartening.

And then this guy attacks the body boarders of VA publicly, when as I stated, they are actually really good riders.

No disrespect intended, I just stated my opinion which I stand behind.

 

It won't look like this for you unfortunately, bananadogpizza, but just to show we do get good waves every once in a blue moon.

Yeah, that's me. Here's another one from the same day, but this time it's my friend riding. This was March 2010, btw. We had my buddies girlfriend with us, otherwise we wouldn't have any pics. Which is typical, rarely do I get pics.

 

I used to be all about taking pictures. Here's one I took when I just started. It's from the November 3, 2008 hurricane swell. It's my same friend who is shacked in the one above. Anyone who remembers this day is praying for another one just like it soon!

Sunday and monday are calling for waist to shest high windswell. I for one fi sitting on the beach would be dying to paddle out. Then again if its rideable IM on it, dont care if its ankle high i always seem to see that one little wave that looks fun and regret to having the right board with me. So bring glass!

 

First of all, if there is a wave at all in Vb than its firing down in Hatteras- look at the continental shelf to see why. Secondly, VB leash laws and surfing restrictions are just further proof that Americans hate freedom, especially virginia beachians. And lastly, avoid first street and croatan at all costs unless you absolutely love a crowd, its even bad mid-winter at those spots. The upside is that 90% of the people out in the lineup are just working on their tans.

PS hit up Marys on 17th street for a killer breakfast all day long.

 

Others are right saying the best place to surf and avoid a crowded lineup is the north end of the beach, basically anywhere 47th street and north. You can usually walk and find a break somewhere. Or just jump in and drift till you get to one and try to stay there. But be careful on the weekends. Surfing isn't allowed from 10 AM to 4 PM. If its firing there will be people out there, but cops get called or just wander down the beach and write up some fat tickets.
