Im thinking of driving from mb to emerald isle this sunday and monday, but the forecast seems too good to be true. Head high (5-7 ft) and clean? Does anyone know how the break holds up there for hurricane swell? Wrightsville as well?
AB/EI are my closest spots. I too am watching it. My worry is that the forecasted head high wave height and period at 12-16 seconds might overpower (closeout) some of the beachbreaks and sandbars. I saw this last May 23, 2010 on a summer NE storm swell. Maybe the projected offshore winds will help groom it up. Wrightsville could be better but it will be crowded. OBX could handle it better but winds may be onshore/sideshore until midweek. I surfed Rodanthe during Hurricane Bill last August and the wave had massive power and current. Alot of storm surge and alot of water moving around. You had to really pick your take off spot on the wave, sometimes just a shoulder would turn knarly. You had to time the paddle out or you would'nt get out. One worked me so hard, I came up gasping for air and my springsuit came unzipped.
When its over head at EI it can tend to break beyond the pier and several more times to the beach. The paddle out can be pretty daunting.
wrightsville will be blown out till mon (unless you know where to go)...EI has certain spots that are going to fire you just need to know where to go...keep driving east and the winds shouldn't be too much of a problem and with this east swell there should be some LONG lefts rolling through, but yes the paddle out will be a *****, but if you can't make it out you shouldn't be surfing it anyway. Hatteras is gonna be massive and like a washing machine unless ya got a boat and some local knowledge
doesn't get much better than having swell, no power, and partying with UNCW freshman who live too far away to go home(and have to crash at your pad)...category 3s and up are no fun though
i live here on bogue banks. if and when you decide to go surfing, be safe and respect your fellow watermen. 7 feet @ 14 seconds is not the conditions to go dropping in on someone. Also, remember the best time to surf is when the swell is building, and also when it is dying off. Too much size and it will shut down the whole island. High tide is better on a storm swell. There are deeper spots nearby that are only accessible by boat. (dont ask) The paddle out is always interesting on big ESE groundies. Prepare to drift to the 'wester real quick like.. The all-too common rip currents should help with the paddle out. There should be some goodies for the first week of september. Earl's track is stationed for a more SE wave, which can get very fun. W.B. will be death chop and crowded with tons of people wishing they made "the drive". take care
blackie, it would figure we'd get a solid ese swell with a north wind. Be careful everyone, we just had a surfer drown here (EI) a couple of months ago and the surf was knee to thigh at best. Other than that, getcha some!
I could use a "surfing buddy" or "surfcrew". I live in Greenville NC and am planning to go to my usual spots on the crystal coast, during the "right time". Hit me up if anyone wants to meet up or share the drive/motel. Could go to the OBX if the winds cooperate. James
Please be respectful of other people out there in the water. Know where you are at at all times and please for God's sake do not drop in on anyone. When you do get a ride hop back on your board immediately and start paddling so the next surfer does not have to dodge you. If you feel like you are getting in the way too much it is because you are GETTING IN THE WAY TOO MUCH. Not trying to be a **** just want everone to stay safe and have a good time. If you are outmatched please do the right thing and let the people who are not outmatched have a good time.
Gonna be searching from Rodanthe to an undisclosed location south of ocracoke. Plenty of coves and such down that way. Gonna be epic homies. Get ready ya'll!! DIRTY SOUTH BEOTCH!!!
