I was looking for everyone's input regarding this coming weekend. I go to school in the middle of Pennsylvania and I am debating driving to jersey to surf, cuz right now friday looks ridiculous and both saturday and sunday look like alot of fun. I don't feel like driving 5 hours one way for this storm to crap out on me, hence my i am asking for opinions from everyone on this forum. Thanks

well the fact that there is no major airport near me or that my boards are all in jersey make this not really an option

It's your call dude...the swell looks like it'll be good, the lineups will be packed as will the beaches, but if you're itching for some waves then I'd go for it. Just keep an eye on the buoys and the local cams where you plan to go and make your call from there. I come from PA too and am constantly checking the forecasts and current conditions and plan when the best time will be that way I make the most out of the long drive.

Not to be a **** but just stay in PA.

EDIT: I would not drive 5 hours to surf no matter how good it is unless you are planning to stay the whole weekend or something....

Yeah that's a crazy long drive. Plus, the hurricane might to come too close and create terrible unsurfable victory at sea conditions. There's really no way to be sure what's going to happen especially at the height of the swell until it happens.

I'm driving from Williamsport pa tonight to catch dawn patrol tomorrow in ocmd. but then again i have to work down there this entire weekend so no matter what happens sometime this weekend ill get some waves. i used to drive 5+ hours to ocmd but have found it better to just bring my boards up here and go to Long island since its closer.

When in doubt, paddle out (or at least go to the beach), I say. Current weather forecasts on the NJ shore are for wind and rain on Friday, but sunny Saturday through Monday. Right now, there's supposed to be good, ridable surf Saturday and Sunday. Assuming this weather forecast holds, I'd head down- even if the waves aren't all they're cracked up to be you'll have some fun in the sun and catch at least a few rides. Sure beats knocking around landlocked central PA for the long weekend.

I'm planning on driving up to Southern NJ from DC (about 4 hours) and this is the rationale I'm applying. As others mentioned, I'd check the forecasts Friday morning before making the final call. In my experience, the weather forecasts as pretty well set up by then, and it's uncommon that you get dramatically different weather.

    Have fun.

    dont bother

Bro this is the worst casewaves on a holiday weekend.. I would stay home.. bag it. Its very possible most beached will be closed out again and if a few are working that will be packed beyond belief

Drove from DC to LI (home) last weekend in typical american hero-weekend warrior fashion on a Friday afternoon..drive was totally miserable, and although everyone else claims to have gotten skunked, the place I surfed was on fire saturday..sunday was a letdown, and then the traffic was brutal coming back...drive should be 5 hours and was 6+ both ways..but when you make a weekend out of it its not as bad.

I think I'm doing the same thing this weekend staying with family in bethany to surf OCMD...I know, I'm now part of the crowd influx, and yes, its embarrassing and I like myself less because of it...I promise it wasn't always this way.

It's worth the drive. Any day at the beach is better than inland or work.:

definately think I'm going down. would rather go and have it not be what i expect then to not go and regret it. Plus being stuck in PA sucks, i've been itching to surfer every since i got back to school and its only been 2 weeks, this is brutal.

Its too bad your boards are in Jersey. You should always keep at least one board with you in case its better to travel to other locations. If you're itching to get wet go for it even if its victory at sea. At least you'll feel the ocean energy and may get a few good ones in. It looks clean at alot of breaks over the weekend. Monday should be good 'cus most people leave then and the beaches are suddenly empty. Kowabunga!

Forecasts are calling for 24mph west winds in NJ on Saturday morning. I hate giving anyone advice on when to take a drive or not, but just keep that in mind as a factor when considering if it's worth your gas money.

If the school in central PA is Penn State, then stay and party your *ss off. If it's any other school, go surf.

a 3 to 4 foot forecast though when the swells are coming from a hurriccane is way more powerful then a normal 3 to 4 foot too so don't go out thinkin its gonna be easy... its not
