Due to the show Jersey Shore, Igor has decided to bypass the state...

The igor long period swell will be a similar direction as with Danielle, so expect to see the Northern part of the county to get shadowed as with Danielle. Just head a bit south.

    Hey Micah,
Please redirect me if you have already explained this. What did you discover was the reason why your wave models were over predicting the nearshore wave heights along Monmouth County? What model do you use to transform the offshore wave heights to nearshore? Just curious...Thanks.

Well, the northern part of the county sees a refraction of the long period SE swells away from the area due to an offshore canyon. This isn't so much reflected in the Monmouth County surf forecast, because the county itself is pretty large and the southern part of the county seems to be picking up the swell. If you look at the Swellinfo wave maps, you will see this being illustrated.

The other aspect is that the wave model can over call the offshore heights.... Which is what happened with Danielle for most of the Northeast (on the initial SE swells), and what looks to be happening with the initial Igor swells as well. The buoy heights are less than model prediction for the northern half of the east coast right now, which is something every forecasting resource is being challenged with during these swells.

Florida and the Southeast are pretty on point for buoy to model comparisons. And, while, the wave model shows healthy SE swells making it into the Northeast from Igor, this isn't showing significantly right now on the buoys. The hatteras buoy is starting to rise, but north of that, most of the long period swells appear to be on the smaller side.

It is good to get in the habit of reading the buoys for these long period swells. These are actual measurements rather than predictions.

was that the windswell from the storm that passed through last night? Or do you think a mix?

ya, mostly wind swell from the frontal system that came through overnight. will decrease through the day.

yeah, it showed too. peaky as hell and kinda gutless. definitely not the long period solid walls from the past few weeks, but absolutely no complaints

This morning was really run. There were mini barrels at Bradley Beach with occassional head high. I was sitting out there and all of a sudden all the pros came out. It then dawned on me that that the Belmar Pro was going on. Chris Kelly, Rob Kelly, Andrew Gesler, and I think I also saw Jamie Moran. They must have been getting a warm up in before their heats.

It was pretty cool surfing with them in the lineup even though I'm still a newbie kook :D
