What size shortboard should I get? I feel like I graduated my 7'6 fun board. I'm 5'7 130lbs. I can catch waves fine, trim a line, do all the basics. So I'm ready to upgrade to a short board. I'm looking at a 6'2 right now, what size do you guys think I should get?
Well, what type of beach are you surfing? California waves? North Carolina? Florida? Maine? Well I have a 7'6'' Frenchys which was my fun board but is starting to fall apart. I also have a 6'2'' Flyer and a 6'6" Mongrel. I think that the retro fish quad is the way to go. My brother has a 5'10" Canyons Fish and it's perfect for small waves...It's so sick.
Go to any of your local shapers and get them to make a board custom for what you need. Only way to go.
Short board local shapers will point you in the right direction. Used boards on Craigslist will help you dial in your size. I'm 5'7" 145lbs and ride different size stuff depending on different waves but an all around small wave off the rack board... CI flyer. Its pretty fun for med size waves and can go on ankle biters too. I have an epoxy tuflite flyer standard 5'10" x 18 1/4 x 2 1/8. I bought it for travel so that at least one of my boards will make it there and not be broken. In PU I like 5'10" x 18 1/8 x 2 or 2 1/8 depending on the rail thickness. You should really just start riding friends boards to feel it out. Different materials float different too. I love duck diving my PU board but hate my Tuflite. That tuflite just don't wanna go under. If i have a wetsuit on it's easier tho. Don't buy new till you know, other wise you'll be selling a $700 dollar board for $400 on CL after one ride.
i was on a funboard, switched to a 6'2 quad retro fish. perfect board, im 6'2 surf it fine. get a lot of waves, manuverable, and fast. fly down the lines.
5'10 to 6'2 is a good range. Fish for mushier days and a shortboard for something with a bit more crest. Mike becker is a great shaper in your area and makes a solid board. Custom will give you exactly what you want without going through boards you dont like. www.naturesshapes.com
