We, the US, rate 5th among the most generous countries with Australia and New Zealand coming out on top one and two
Google works for everyone http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/08/11-most-generous-countrie_n_709950.html I stand corrected, we're rated 6th

Talking to me? Were you talking to me? Just making sure here, because I never said America sucks. Quite the opposite. We alone have the opportunity to change things because we have the resources and the ingenuity to figure it all out. I won't be leaving because I really do believe we can figure it out. And with that, whoever does figure it out will be some rich mofo's, and I personally would like to be a part of that because (a) money is cool and (b) I want to see America beauitful and not a dump. As for food and aid, yes we do a lot. A lot of that stuff is politically motivated, but that's fine. We have to take care of our friends. That's the way it works. The most important things right now (in my opinion) are to develop better energy efficiency, food and water safety, and waste disposal. Ultimately energy will be expensive because oil is not going to last forever. Whoever finds a better way to move people around will be a VERY rich man. Ultimately our food and water sources will also be expensive, and the guy who solves that will be a hero. Nobody really thinks about waste disposal, but whoever finds an alternative to single-use plastics (or at least a way to safely destroy them) will have my support. There are a few other countries working on this stuff, Denmark being a key player. However, the rest of the world looks to us for entertainment, optimism, and technology. We HAVE to do it because no one else will. Then we'll sell them our solutions because they'll be cheap. If we don't do it, eventually China will step in and push us off the podium. Nobody here would want that, but it could happen.
sorry man. America-bashing is one thing that REALLY sets me off. You are right. We need to push REALISTIC alternatives that the average person can accept. Where in the hell is fusion?
No worries No worries man, you kinda touched a nerve haha. I've spent over 10 years now serving in the military and haven't enjoyed 90% of the experience. If I get the feeling someone is questioning my commitment to the USA, it sets me off just a wee bit, because the fact that I'm sacrificing my mental health for something bigger than myself is really the only consolation I have in a job that I hate. As a nuclear power type, I'm with ya on fusion hahaha. We should also be recycling used Uranium like France does since it'll cut down almost 90% on the current fuel waste inventory...but that's a whole 'nother discussion. Speaking of realistic alternatives, does anyone get pissed whenever a "clean coal" commercial airs? That is NOT a realistic alternative because you still have the carbon, you're just storing it in a "box". Eventually you have to do something with the box. Rain forest clear-cutting is another huge problem. It's not so clear what WE can do to alleviate that. You have very poor people who can have all the money they'd ever want if they get rid of their rain forest by selling out to a logging company. How do we create an alternative to that? We have to figure out something there too.
nuke plants are clearly the good short term solution. as far as clear cutting goes, some enviro groups are actually doing the correct thing here. they are buying up the land so it can't be clear cut.
Wow this is crazy. Tommorow about to be my 3rd day out of school from flu symptoms. Ive surfed the past weekend and monday at Deal.
oh yeah that water messed me up too. Yesterday I was at the library desk at school checking out some cds after being in the water alot the previous days. I was checking them out with the librarian and felt what I thought was a little saltwater/snot mix coming outta my nose and I just sniffed it back up. The librarian told me to grab a tissue but i told her i was fine. Then she pointed to the desk I was standing over, there lay one drop of blood. When I turned my head down to look at it/ clean it, someone turned the faucet on in my nose and that thing just drained blood all over them rental miles davis cds. hahah it was too funny but really awkward as anything at the same time. I ran outta that joint to the bathroom and my nose continued to pour for 10 minutes. my drum teacher who was in the bathroom at the time told me it was cause all of that salt water. but i did not tell him i ruined all them jazz cds he wanted me to listen too.
This is really eye opening - I was completely ignorant of this - absolutely shocked reading this about HA and right here in Monmouth Cty....
yeah i am kinda shocked after reading this i guess i was super ignorant to that fact the ocean is dirty , i surfed all weekend in Virginia Beach and have had nasty sinus problems all week , i guess its from the water
You should still make sure you get to listen to them... Philly Joe Jones, Tony Williams, etc are legendary. I was in Ventnor City for my bachelor party the weekend of the Sept 11th. I was surfing in some really tiny waves when a slightly less tiny wave came up on me while I wasn't paying attention. It flipped my over and shot water straight through my sinuses. Right away it started to tickle and was pretty much a full blown sinus infection by the next morning. Of course, there were probably a couple other things that weekend that may have made me sick.
Man I read this whole thread I got in two really solid days this week. ear infection and swolen lymphnode in my neck real bad.
I respect privacy and confidentiality, and I'm not a member of Surfrider so I probably wouldn't fill out their Ocean Sickness survey but I hope a steering committe member is reading this forum and aware of the incidents being posted.
i haven't noticed myself feeling differently or out of the ordinary. i read this thread the other night, but really didn't have time to reply. that sucks about oahu, and diamond head though. i really love it there. kinda breaks my heart.
Go to the doc bro...that is exactly what I got/have. Viral inner ear infection and the pressure has given me bells palsy on the left side of my face. Entire side of face is numb and only have partial movement there for about a week. Starting to get better now that the doc gave me some drugs (antiviral and steroids).
Surferdann - That's insane. Hope you're 100% soon. Can you give us an idea of where you surfed and got sick afterwards? Thanks.
