Welcome to Jersey! Welcome to Jersey, bro! Be a little patient with us Jerseyans - we like to tell it like it is, for better or worse. It can rub you the wrong way or you can choose to get a kick out of us. I live in Red Bank. Feel free to ask me for any advice, but here's 2 tips to get you started. 1. Pizza at Nunzio's in Long Branch. Go there now. Say hello to Snooky the waitress, the Original Snooky. They're closed Tuesdays. 2. I second the motion on Hartshorne/Huber Woods, Atlantic Highlands/Twin Lights/Sandy Hook exploring. Whenever someone visits me from overseas or wherever, first stop is Twin Lights to give them a lay of the land. That entire area is great in terms of hikes, biking, history, views, nature, fishing, kayaking, etc.
Hartshorne is pretty sweet. I destroyed myself there once. There's a steep hill right near the parking lot and after we rode the trails we all tried to go straight down that hill. riding the back brake and basically putting the seat of the bike up near your stomach. I got 3/4 of the way down and decided to let off the brake and gun it for the rest of the hill. I ended up going over my handle bars and taking a tree stump to the chest. I walked away but it could've been much worse. Allaire is definetly up there with Hartshorne. It's huge and there are a ton of trails. Just dont get lost.
I was born and raised in this area and love this place!!! I live just 5 mins north of sandy hook and can hook you up with any info you need. I know all the bar/club/resturant owners too, that can be helpful. For the most part, everyone is real chill around here, but of course you get the occasional Aggro prick(like anywhere else). If you want to come out for a really awesome night, my cousins band (G Band) is playing at a place called the windanse (on shrewsbury ave in highlands). It's going to be on Thanksgiving Eve and is gauranteed a wild night. Def cab it if you're planning on drinking, cops will be all over that night. Msg me for any more info that you need, but it looks like you recieved quite a welcome from the area.....
Wow, you moved to NJ! I grew up in Middletown and hiked Hartshorne a bunch as a Kid. Get ready for the culture shock of the police, lots and lots of police as compared to the eastern shore. I remember when I first moved to Ocean City I felt like I was in the wild west, UMM where are the cops? They are on every corner in NJ ready to nail you for a late inspection sticker . I have friends up there who stopped surfing because of the crowds hope you don't find that to be true. If you get up to Sandy Hook remember those pictures I posted of how it used to be?
As far as minor traffic violations, I think Southern Delaware is the worst! I've gotten a bunch of speeding tickets, and almost all of them were in southern Delaware.
Yeah, it could have been the age I was when I lived there. I moved down here in my 30's so the law wasn't a big issue for me. I do miss the old Sandy Hook but don't drive up much anymore. I am so isolated where I am once I get into the NJ traffic I loose it. Stay away from Route 35 on a Friday night in the summer, lol!
if you're into Downhill MTBing try Diablo in Vernon. its super technical and has some awesome jumps. also, you dont have to do any pedaling uphill (if you're that lazy)
Dude I also grew u p in Middletown and had the same problem w cops. I used to drive like a little asshole and **** did I pay for it. Countless tickets ha. I'm pretty sure they crawl over tinton falls also but when you're not a teenager anymore I guess it's a bit different
i live in manasquan, which is basically the southern most part of monmouth county. it is an awesome town. basically a small surf/fisherman town. we have a few nice places to eat in town on east main/main st. also up at the inlet we have a dog beach around the corner. not to mention inlet gets one of the nicest wedges on the east coast(gets super crowded though). definitely check out the L jetty (right over the ocean ave bridge into avon) during the first day of a winter swell, it will be good.
could be good down here best bet if that friday forecast happens,Micah, just pm for the heads up if you want to surf northern ocean county
