Whatsup. I am new here, but have lurked a bit. I am planning a surftrip from NJ to PR from December 26 to around January 4th or 5th. I am 17, but the dudes I am going with are 19 and 18. We are looking to fly into Aquadilla Airport and stay somewhere in Rincon where we can walk or bike to different breaks. Nothing fancy, but we don't want to be kidnapped either. We are looking for cheap cheap cheap so please help us out. So far I found the Rincon Inn (25 a night and decent reviews, but idk how close it is to a nice wave), but I would like something closer to a better break considering it is 2 miles from a legit break. Please help me out! Oh yeah, we are renting a car too, but not looking to drive that much. Any tips on how to save money, cheap airfair, where to eat or stay, or anything is appreciated.
Considering you want to bike to the breaks, 2 miles away will only take like 10 minutes? I'm not familiar with the PR area, but I assume if you're only there for about a week 25$ a night is a crazy low rate, even considering the places to stay in PR aren't the best. Saving money is staying at the Rincon Inn. Also, are you planning on bringing your boards with you there? That'll cost you a crap load
Ya I figured 2 mile bikeride isnt that bad I ride my bike a couple miles sometime to get to a good break at home if its not good by my house. We are trying to stay for 2 weeks so I figured 25 a night is super super cheap and I guess I can't get much cheaper haha. It is 100 dollars per boardbag, so we're gunna try and stuff 4 boards in a bag. The roundtrip flight is about 600 dollars, is there a website where I can save money on roundtrip flights
You can most certainly try and put more than one board in a bad, but if they have to search it or say that it's too big, you will most likely have to pay for each board. If you and your buds are ok with walking or biking a little bit to the best breaks, then I'm sure you're set. Is that round trip flight per person or for all of you guys? As for a website, i'm not 100% sure but you can hit up travelocity or expedia
high flight prices Believe it or not, that might not be a bad price. I mean it is bad, but it might be in keeping with the market. I've been traveling to Nicaraqua( from Virginia Beach) for 5 years now. Up until this year I have always been able to find a flight on one of the websites you mentioned for between $450-$525. This year the best I could do is $775. Friends traveling to Belize(not to surf) are dealing with the same thing. Something is up with the market. Don't let that keep you from trying though. Good luck.
my first trip to puerto rico, we did not get a car, and it was the biggest mistake. Rincon can go through down periods, and when it does you will want a car to get to the Aguadilla area, where it rarely drops under chest high. Other times, Rincon can be overhead for days and days, but it is still worth having a car or else you will be walking quite a bit. Just a heads up, I've been through it. The problem though, is if you are under 25, the rental cars are much more expensive. Some places, rental cars aren't necessary, I would say you should have a car in Puerto Rico. Have you checked out the Swellinfo Puerto Rico Surf Vacation Rentals listings.
I've looked through it a bit, but I think I am gunna go with the Rincon in. Ya thanks for the car tip, I think my mom is going to pre-rent it with her info and stuff and once we get to the airport we're just going to pick it up. Hopefully something like that can happen, but idk if theyll give us a car cause were too young.
Doesn't seem too young. At this age, all 3 of you should have your license. Since Puerto Rico is U.S. territory, you're all in good company.
They might hit you with the under 25 fee... They will check your license when you pick up the car. Just giving you a heads up. This happened to me a while back, and we ended up paying a lot more then we thought we were going to have to.
what are the waves like in PR ? in the rincon area mostly rights? mostly lefts? hollow? steep or mushy ? reef or beach break? im intrested in going, i been to costa but dont know much about PR also what do you like better CR or PR ??? THANKS !
just got back from PR a couple weeks ago. stayed at casa verde right there on sandy beach, real cool place, nice bar/grill upstairs. like i said, its right at sandys, 2 minute walk to pools, and about 10 minute walk to domes/marias. if u have a car, u will still walk to pools and sandys, then take a 1 mintue drive to domes/marias. we drove up to NYC and flew out of JFK to aguadilla for $224 roundtrip with jetblue.....cant beat that price for anything!
Mostly rights, some lefts. Some breaks are hollower than others, and a lot depends on the wind, naturally. You're not going to get a total barrel fest in the Rincon area during an average swell, but some spots have fun tubey sections. For typical average Rincon waves something like a flyer worked best for me. When it gets big, a big wave board is a must. Tres can get big and hollow. 6-8 ft. ("baby tres") can be really good with few consequences for a competent surfer. When it's small, a longboard is a lot of fun... speedy nose trims with the reef reeling under your feet. Places like Wilderness are more hollow, but that's a bit of a drive. Most of the breaks are reef breaks. A few sand bottom breaks around, but Rincon is mostly reef. Jobos is sandy, but again... it's a drive. I prefer PR over Costa. Both are beautiful places. PR is a lot more gritty, but the diving is really, really good when it's flat. Costa is slower paced and more rural. Getting around Costa is more challenging than getting around PR, and I love Puerto Rican food.
Here is the Casa Verde Rincon Rental information on Swellinfo.com. If you decide to stay there, tell them you found them on Swellinfo! We are trying to make the rentals section the place to go when you need to find a place to stay on your travels...
unfortunately, you have to be twenty-one to rent out rooms here. I actually saw this place, a lot of local dudes from around me stay there. Thanks for the headsup though. Also about that two hundred something dollar jetblue flight, did you book it on a website?
i booked on jetblue.com i booked in july though, for a november flight. you might be a little too close to your date to get a really good deal, and when you want to go is the "in-season" time so rates will be a little higher
Dude Spirit Air goes right to Agua. I was gonna say check out their website but i just tried and it's down... on the biggest travel day of the year... Anyway, I've heard of people who are in their $9 fair club get to PR and back for like $100 roundtrip.
wow Thanks that is some great info, you got me so excited to go haha btw are yyou the same lbcrew from dukestorm ?
I've been down there alot and actually will be there from Dec 17-23. You will definitely need that rental car. There are so many breaks and with the wind changes, you're going to want to be mobile. Talk to the everyone possible to find out info, the bar scene is a good place for that.... hahahha Seriously though, it's an awesome place, do some exploring and you'll easily get familiar. Domes & Sandy Beach are good spots to start off to get started and they're real close to each other. Then you've got Maria's and Dogmans, which are near the Calypso bar. The point at Maria's is probably going to be crowded but it's def get some great waves. If you haven't surfed a reef break before, watch where you're entering and exiting the water. Watch the other people go in and out, there are certain spots that there's a break in the reef. Jumping right in ontop of that reef can be a huge mistake, I've seen it done a few times, not a good thing! I would stick away from the bike riding with the boards.... Those roads are not in good condtion and people drive crazy as hell! Make sure you lock your car doors too and don't have anything valuable in the car while your out surfing (like your ID's, cash, etc..) that **** will be gone for sure! Let me know if you need any more info!
