Has been a long December surf wise here at LBNY. Jersey got that mega swell, New England had more one nice swell. I was stranded in Manhattan for the blizzard and missed the blizzard swell. I heard it wasn't great with mega offshores. Swells just seemed to not hit us right. We got waves for a stretch before Christmas and my spot was not working at dawn with peak high tides. The cam at low tide in the middle of the day looked a lot better. Combined with being the month with the least amount of daylight....I am in an episode of the twilight zone. Thinking of flying somewhere with swell for the upcoming three day weekend. Its my own personal Search world tour stop. Blow off some cash irresponsibly. lol Stay positive ya'll and pray for surf.
I spent the entire day of the blizzard between cams and reports, and although some of the cams looked do-able, the sheer spray coming off the lips and the lack of people out (not to mention the 24 inches of snow and multiple plow-ins) cast some serious doubt on whether there would be any fun involved in going out. A week and a half of vacation on LI and only had half an hour in the water to show for it with just a handful of waves. First time ever skunked in Montauk too.
Barreled in the blizzard im glad im not any one of your psychiatrists. there were clean waist high waves the sunday of the blizzard. nice little barrels yes sometimes living in new york implies that you might have to make a trip to the dirty jerz here and there. and **** if u can afford it get out of the state and get on the most crowded spots ever. complain all you want. this fall had some sweet swells and id wait another month even if i only get one overhead day of bomb surf we got it eazy because we dont have to deal with crowding and kooking atleast till the summer...but everywhere is the same. chin up ya'll just dont believe the hype stay cool and the waves will keep comming
Costa I was just in Guanacaste, Costa Rica..Was stoked for months on end about the trip only to find when i got there there was no swell. I still had a blast but now there is a perfect swell coming in there so I would get your ass to Playa Grande or somewhere like tht...
dont worry, blizzard swell wasnt much of a swell at all...dont think anybody really actually scored, might say they did. but im sure they did not......as of the idea of gettting away for a bit, GO FOR IT......arrived in peniche portugal 3 days ago and have been surfing 3x daily since....not to mention the conditions might as welll be epic since its 60degrees and the waves never really get below chest high here during the winter....so go for it! no reason to live in NY if your a surfer. no reason to live in NY in the winter PERIOD. get out!!!
Was not able to get out of the house during the day of the blizzard, but from some of the cams, it did seem do able. Christmas day offered pretty consistent lefts. Though small it was still awesome to be in the water. I got no doubt that the waves will be back soon for us!
SURF: 4-6 ft shoulder high to 1 ft. overhead occ. 8 ft. FAIR CONDITIONS Hey, this is Schaler with the report for Tuesday afternoon PM REGIONAL OVERVIEW: New WNW-NW groundswell is on the rise this afternoon, as some small Southern Hemi swell mixes in and our old WNW swell mix drops out. Better breaks are good for chest-shoulder-head high+ surf, with some occasional 2-3' overhead sets working through at top exposures. Light Westerly winds keep conditions fairly clean through town, with most breaks offering up some scattered, workable corners as the tide heads for a negative low, bottoming out right around 4:30pm. This morning's dawn patrol: Mostly clean lines on offer this morning. Looking a little soft/shouldery at times, with some occasional lined-up corners working through. WEATHER: Mostly sunny with West winds 3-7kts.
whinny *****es! http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/l...oast-winter-swell-post-holiday-present_51371/ look for new york and then talk to me you all are eather grumpy old men pining that your day is comming soon and your dying to surf here at home b4 u die and some of you got the right idea and dont appreciate what its worth complain complain complain where is all the action in you people. why dont we complain on how dirty the water is due to all the **** they are dumping into Reynolds Channel!!!
New York is not the place to be a surfer. It is a place to work, and occasionally go surfing. You need to travel if you want real surf.

Lol, tell that to Balaram Stack: http://www.surfline.com/video/contests/balaram-stack-wins-unsound-pro_47565 Anyone complaining about being a surfer in New York is a f%cking p%ssy. This place gets as powerful as any beach break in the world, there are uncrowded jetties 6 months out of the year, if the wind is wrong it's an hour drive to Jersey, it's a two hour drive to east end point break surf, and if it goes flat, pick up a f%cking skateboard. Or better yet, take the A train to Howard Beach JFK, buy a ticket to BQN and take the 2 hour, 350 dollar flight to some of the best surf on the planet. Yeesh!! At least you're not on the gulf coast, great lakes, or a 10 hour drive from the closest body of water. Appreciate what you have instead of b%tching and moaning.
Did you read "Free Association with Balaram Stack" on page 114 of Jan 2011 Surfer Magazine? "New York_ Love it way more than Cali. We don't have as many surfers and we get the best of every kind of weather." All surfers travel. Surfers from Cali travel. Surfers from Hawaii travel. Stack spent much of his youth surfing the breaks from Lido to LB and now he rips. What we lack in consistency in the NE we make up for with hunger. I am frothing at the mouth and will be the first guy out at Hammels if it's knee high slop. There are two types of people. Those who b%tch and moan when their surroundings don't meet their standards, and those who take what they have and work their ass off to make the best of it. I guess you just have to ask yourself which type you are.
lol im saying NY sucks because im currently in portugal scoring supertubes off my head! i grew up watching balaram shred all over longbeach and yes he is a extremely talented surfer, but i mean comon the kid had traveld half way around the world to surf by the time he was 17! a bit more accellerated than most people. but hey heres my chance to catch up! we all kno when its good its good and theres no place more rewarding to surf than the north east, but damn its just soo depressing with these strong offshores blowing any hopes of waves out to sea whoever said ny is a good place to work and a good place to surf occasionally put it perfectly consider ourselvs lucky that we live so close to an international airport lolol
