I don't know if this is just a rumour or what so I decided to ask you guys if you've heard anything... Adkins Hardware and Lumber (just north of midtown) is closing down, for good this time, I'm pretty sure. I've heard from several people that a surf shop owner bought the property, but noone seems to know who. I'm pretty sure it's not Chris (Kcoast) or Chauncey. I don't think either one of them needs more room. But the interesting thing I've heard from several unreliable sources (dudes that gossip more than chicks) is that Billabong is opening up their own store there. It's hard to get to the truth through all the **** that goes around this town in the offseason... IMO we don't really need another surf shop, but whatever. Anybody know what's really up??
billabong already had a store on 78th st. it was open for 3 years and it closed down. word on the street is that chris and mark are changing that into their own little creation coming this spring. as far as the lumber spot, coastal edge is coming to oc, and the owner is deciding whether to put it there, or down in the 45th st village. the owner is a guy from va beach who owns some of the sunsations, so you can expect a big "sunsations-of-a-surfshop." and yes, i agree, oc is saturated with surf shops, no need for another. but that doesn't mean one won't open in fenwick...
There is already a billabong store on 78th st. It is also owned by the same person as Kcoast. so there goes that theory. have not heard anything about this, but at the rate they are going, it will probably be another sunsations
Yeah, I remember the one on 78th. I stopped in there one day in the fall a few years ago looking for a top and they only carried clothes, no gear. lame. I heard something about the coastal edge thing awhile back, but didn't know that was a location they were looking at. that sucks. those ****shops are horrible. There is going to be nowhere to get lumber in oc now...
Who told you they are closing? I was under the impression they will be opening again in the spring. edit: Last year when they were trying to sell the property the asking price was extremely high. I highly doubt a surf shop would have the funds for a property of that size. If they do sell it its probably going to turn into another condo or restaurant. It's a shame too, I hope it doesn't close down.
the sunsations guy did have plans for a massive renovation at 45th st shopping mall including 2 new condo buildings and now that you remind me, this new surf shop was a part of that plan. those plans changed many times and most of all of that has been done away with cause there is no money in new condos right now. so that being said ill bet this guy still has a big wad of cash burning a hole in his pocket that may very well go into buying this adkins EDIT: here is an article, its outdated but just a little more insight http://oceancitychronicle.blogspot.com/2010/07/sunsations-owner-gets-into-surf-market.html
I bought the store and I am putting in a flow rider. Free cotton candy to the first 3 people!!! WOOT WOOT I will also be adding indoor skydiving
