Dude, the kayak stuff is pretty sick. I give those dude somes credit. They surf the boat ramp alot on the cliffs, and I must say, when they take a big set wave and ride it to the inside, they almost always roll the thing, and when that happens, it a freakin yard sale. Kayak slappin on the rocks, sh** floating everywhere. the guys hit the reefs.. They have to go for broke on those things! It funny when it doesnt work out I must say... But they never really get in the way.

No we don't have to get along. "Kooks" sure we all were at one time but the difference is 99.9% of us were kooks on a surf board. You're a kook on a dingy without the mast and sail and dont belong in a designated surf area. Especially during the summer. In the winter I could care less, just like Lee stated; sup's dont appear to be the winter water types.

Im all for setting up a 200' x 200' area just for sups in the summer where all of of you can dress up like pirates and do battle out on the raging sea. I, I me matey's happy sailing!

Thanks and Ditto, I met a SUP like that too. Because of his age and several knee operations just can't pop up anymore so now SUP's. Agree, you can't paint all SUP's or Yakers with the same brush as this SUP's etiquette in the line up is heck a far cry better than some of the others who don't play well in the water.

    Definitely agree with this statement...

Usually I don't respond to these types of threads...but I'll drop a few comments into the mix...flame me, whatever...I really don't care...take it as you wish...

    1. This story is the same old song (think LBs vs. Shortboarders, spongers vs. surfers, etc.) just recontextualized with SUPs...as the main subject. SUPers sit outside can get waves earlier than other forms of equipment and we get pissed b/c our wave count goes down. I've been there...I get it...however, this was the same song and dance 10yrs. ago with LB resurgence...still happens now at plenty of breaks I surf with LBers sitting outside waiting for most of the sets...IMO there always a few waves in a set...no problem...I grab another, move, or take some scraps...surfing is straight up fun regardless...

    2. To be honest, IMO there is no difference between a leashless 10' log shooting at me from a LBer who is too cool for school, a shortboarder that can't hold a line and straighten outs right at me, and a SUPer who is outta control paddle flailing...plain and simple...the biggest issue with these types of people regardless of equipment is the need for etiquette and education...period. I'm not talking bullying in the lineup...physical, verbal, whatever...I find that a cool head and a friendly conversation usually work wonders as well as a compliment or two.

    3. Pretty funny that this is really an issue on this coast. I think I have seen probably 10+ SUPers over the last 3-4 yrs. in the areas where I surf in Jersey (now I can't speak of further south, but come on...are they really that much of a problem for you? Can't move further down the beach...what about the next jetty over...I'd imagine there is another sandbar in the area you could post up at... Further, realize that I am sure that they are going to increase, but the same could be said for most other types of surf equipment... So what is really the issue? Is the issue that some have no control? Education goes a long way...kinda like talking with a youg kid going out on a day he can't handle...same thing...

For the record, I own a SUP...9'3" c4 subvector and when it is less than knee high...high tide and really weak...the thing is a dream and I have a blast...I've even surfed it at head high and had fun, but glad that I brought my HPSB..sinking the tail on that beast was brutal! Lastly, I have SUP'ed only once in the winter...however with the water temp and air temp all mid-30s and the wind whipping a bit...rubber is not the greatest insulator in that circumstance...outside of my gloves began to frost over...toes were frozen...never again for me.

    Thanks for listening...flame away...

and repeat for the entire session

    To clarify:
Theres a time and a place for SUP. Alternative crafts are good for the sport. We all have equal interest in the ocean. I think every hater of SUP has been subjected to the above quoted scenario. It seems to me like a great majority of em ride them because they know they have an advantage and will abuse it, regardless of skill level.

If your charging heavy on a SUP, good on ya!

I used to surf Maine and kayaks are real big up there cause Maine has a lot of islands. On big days with big shore break it'd be a tough paddle on a board let alone a kayak and they would take a beating trying to get out. They would constantly get thrown back to shore and would get bashed onto the rocks or thrown upside down on their heads. Being true kooks they would take quite a beating before they made it out to the breakers. They didn't get in they way too much but true kooks...

I have said it before, spleeft has one of the sweetest SUP's I have seen. It is also one of the smallest and most manueverable.

Man that's awesome! I have been working around the house and taking reservations for next summer. Trying to plan my schedule for stress free surf whenever there are waves. You know I will be running up and down the beach with my board no matter what I plan, lol. When the weather is like this I keep thinking of those days down at that spot surfing perfect waist to chest high waves, we got some really fun surf the end of last summer didn't we? I surfed last week around my usual haunt and got it good but I almost lost a toe or two due to the cold. My body was fine but my feet were numb for 2 days. Glad you got away to the "summer", have you seen Steve S? I haven't in a long time.
