So tomorrows swell looks pretty fun for the afternoon but the weather looks like its gonna be rainy all day. I've surfed in the rain plenty of times in the summer but never in the winter, anyone ever do it? Could be annoying while changing in and out of my suit outside. Also with all the rain I'm wondering what the water quality will be like, it was pretty brown last week and I'm thinking it could be pretty nasty tomorrow, I guess I'll just have to find out. Anyone on here ever get sick from surfing during/after a lot of rain and nasty water?
it will be annoying when changing - but at least it wont be really cold changing when it's snowing on you is really annoying too but more so due to the temperature as opposed to the precipitation never had a problem here in ocmd due to runoff, when there is swell it going to stir up the water and we dont have any rivers flowing into the lineup, not sure where the stormwater drains empty to but pretty sure they flow into the bay - I use a neti pot/nasal flush after surfing in the winter to clear my sinuses each time anyway, this may help prevent sickness a bit too, seems to make a big difference for me.
I think you are less likely to get sick from surfing in the rain in the winter aposed to the summer. There are less cars on the road to drip fluids on the street and there are less ppl in town . So the volume of water used it less makin the risk of illness smaller.
Try to avoid surfing next to or near drainage pipes and you should be OK. I got pretty sick after a session near a pond overflow pipe once...everyone that went did. It was warm, and most likey due to the high abundance of goose poo water flowing out of the pipe.
Looking good. Waiting to book my ticket, but im leaving May 25th. My pops is sending out my car on one of his trucks when he has one going that way. (transamer.com) Living on my 1 friends couch for a month then looking into a 1BR in pacific beach with another friend who is also making the trip!
sick! i'm livin' out there around newport for two weeks to stay with a buddy of mine at chapman university. good luck doood. to add to the topic, i love surfing in the rain.....in warm water/air. it's a very surreal experience, especially when it's raining hard, and it makes the waves clean. My favorite time to surf is when a gnar, brief, summer lightning storm hits with strong winds, heavy rain and lightening for 10-15, because there is always a wave afterward with glassy conditions afterward.
That would be the one,and yes it is. I actually surfed near another outflow further North this past Thursday, that is grosser in my opinion. Can you guess that one? The water looked pretty bad too, but I was hoping it was just churned up sand. I didn't get sick, so maybe that's all it was. The waves were great though.
i wouldnt be worried about getting sick but does anyone actually know what is in the salt that they put on the roads to melt the ice? thats gotta be getting in the water somewhat...
I was thinking the same as you, but found out most NJ beach towns just put sand down on the road, and some started using "pickle juice" as a de-icer. not actually throwing down much salt anymore like they used to do in years past. the salt is harder on the roads, groundwater and cars that drive on it.
The Pickle Juice is sprayed on the roads prior to snow and Iceing weather. It dries in the street and when the snow falls the juice activates keeping the roads semi clean unitl the plow and salt truck get out . Most plow companies use a mixure of salt and sand and from what I am being told it all natural and friendly to the enviorment
thats pretty cool that they use pickle juice and some sand too. my girlfriend is from the coal belt in central PA and they use ashes on the roads there from all the burning coal that people use. i think the water should be ok, now im just more worried about all the retarded drivers im going to encounter on my way tomorrow
Even with all the rain this system will bring, the ground is frozen and covered with snow and the stormwater sytems will be choked off with snow and ice thus reduced surface runoff. Plus the snow cover will reduce the rate of drainage. So runoff should not be much of a problem compared with a spring or fall equivalent type of storm The roads are the problem, that's gonna be a s**t show...especially in the Lehigh Valley
