Bad Idea Doesnt anyone think this might be a bad idea...? We have enough people surfing here we dont need more attention on our mediocre to rarely epic waves.... I hope its flat and they cant run the contest.....I will still be there and it will be sick.. but I dont think its a good idea... any thoughts?
really? we live and surf on one of the most densely populated islands on earth. maybe i'm naive, but it doesn't seem like it could get too much more crowded than it already is during the summer. plus when the waves are big the less experienced are stuck on the beach anyway. maybe some more nyc people start trying it out in rockaway but again, how much worse can it get?
Surfing is growing exponentially. The crowds can and will get much worse. There were 25 heads out at Hammels in RB last swell. 5 years ago it would have been empty there for the past 4 months. It can and will get much more crowded, it's just the nature of the beast. Knowledge and fitness will always pay off though so as the crowds get worse you'll just have to look/work harder.
interesting. i was thinking that adding more bodies to an already crowded summer lineup wouldn't seem so bad. you know, what's 25 more bodies added to a lineup of 100? but i see what you mean about winter waves where 15-20 people can seem like A LOT when you're used to it being empty. (i was out yesterday morning alone for about 20 minutes before 10 people showed up in ice storm within an hour so i see what you mean.) still, i don't think this contest is going to blow up our spots too hard. most people who would surf, already do and if it does bring in some new people, they won't be competing for set waves for a couple years at least so it shouldn't be too bad. if anything maybe some longboarders decide they want to be like jordy and start riding potato chips and catch less waves...
umm no.. not the WT but unsound pro has consistently scored during this time period and has had a smaller window to do so
considering i have watched the unsound pro every year, they never have scored. a few days before and a few days after the contest a few times there were good waves, but that contest is a long way off from the wct. love to see the pros come but seriously there are a million better spots then lb for them. either way im gonna surf in the trials.....
this is deffinantely an honor, but i think some of you are right about the waters getting crowded. i remember when i first started surfing and when five surfers out i thought it was a lot.... but im deffinately going to try to migrate down from mass for this event... its gonna be sick if they score
aside from this possibly increasing crowds out here, the chances that they will score good waves.... heck any waves is on the low side. We got waves here for sure, and I feel like its def. gotten better over the last few years for whatever reason.... I mean I surfed on some kind of wave practically every week from july to november (didnt have a winter suit yet) this year and that hasnt always been the case looking back a lifetime out in rockaway beach. So, Im somewhat optimistic that we'll have some kind of surf during thier window here. But I will def. not be surprised if they get no waves for the event. Either way, the cats out of the bag for liesure manhattan-ites that read something about surf in the nytimes and want to give it a go.
http://www.grem67.com/pages/VIDEO_PAGES/OPHILIA.wmv.html for a couple years in a row (or at least seemed that way) they scored some sort of hurricane surf... if it comes in like that i'd consider it a success remember teaphoo this year? or was it last? it was like chest high
Kman got the picture hope they get skunked so bad that they give the million bucks to the city of long beach or balaram gets it. maybe if they get good waves, we could surf our breaks a little less uncrowded cuz the kook circus will all be on lincoln with the rest of them.
tiny chopes it was... was pretty lame so yeah comparing it is fair.. consistency/size/shape/power etc etc. they aren't in the same universe.. but like i said chest high chopes was lame with barely a barrel
